Chapter 8 - The Weight of Freedom

The rain was falling in a gentle, rhythmic sheet against the glass windows of Alec’s penthouse apartment as I stood out on the balcony, looking down at the glittering lights of the Boston skyline below.

The trial was over. The headlines had faded from the front pages, replaced by the relentless, churning cycle of corporate news. Luke was locked away in a cell four hundred miles away. His family’s corporate empire had distanced itself entirely from the scandal, leaving the Vances as mere shadows of their former high-society glory.

And I was standing on a balcony overlooking the city I loved, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea, feeling lighter than air.

The sliding glass door clicked open, and Alec stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses of aged scotch. He handed one to me, stepping up beside me and resting his elbows against the glass railing.

"Penny for your thoughts, Clara," Alec murmured, his ice-blue eyes reflecting the city lights as he looked down at me.

I took a slow sip of the tea, letting the warmth spread through my chest. "I was just thinking about who I was a year ago," I confessed quietly, a faint smile touching my lips. "I was trapped in a tiny apartment, terrified of answering the phone, convinced that my life was permanently ruined because a man decided I wasn't enough."

Alec turned slightly, placing his glass down on the small patio table. He reached out, taking my tea mug from my hand and setting it aside as well, before capturing both of my hands in his warm, steady grip.

"You were never ruined, Clara," Alec said, his voice dropping into a rich, resonant register that sent a thrill straight down my spine. "You were just buried under the wreckage of someone else’s sins. And all you needed was a shovel to dig your way back to the sun."

I looked up into his chiseled, handsome face, feeling the familiar, undeniable electrical current that seemed to spark whenever we were this close.

"And you happened to bring an excavator," I teased softly, a playful sparkle in my eyes.

Alec chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that vibrated in his chest. He stepped closer, sliding his arms around my waist, pulling me flush against his solid frame.

"I'd move mountains for you, Clara," Alec whispered, his gaze dropping to my lips. "You and little Toby. You're my home."

Before I could answer, he leaned down and pressed a deep, lingering kiss to my lips—a kiss that tasted of scotch, autumn rain, and the absolute, unshakeable promise of a brand-new beginning.
