Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Blueprint

The east nursery was a gilded cage designed by a father who had more money than tenderness. High vaulted ceilings, hand-painted cloud murals, and shelves lined with hundreds of unopened toys filled the expansive room. Yet, despite the luxury, it felt hollow—a room meant to isolate a child rather than nurture him.

Noah sat quietly on the edge of the velvet-upholstered bed, clutching his stuffed fox while I dabbed a cool, damp cloth against the small scrape on his forehead.

"Does it hurt?" I asked softly, smoothing his dark curls back from his brow.

Noah shook his head, his wide, dark eyes staring intently toward the heavy oak door. "Is the bad man gone, Miss Clara?"

"Your father is checking the house right now, Noah," I replied, choosing my words carefully. "Nobody is going to hurt you while I'm here. But I need you to tell me something. Who is the man you saw? Have you seen him before?"

Noah shivered, pulling the blanket up to his chin. "He lives in the walls. When the thunder gets loud, he taps on the glass. He wears a silver ring with a snake on it, just like the one in Daddy’s desk."

A cold prickle of unease washed over my skin. A silver ring with a snake. That wasn't just the description of a ghost; it was a calling card. In the underworld networks of Chicago, symbols meant everything.

A sharp knock at the heavy oak door made us both jump.

Before I could answer, the door clicked open. Dominic Vale stepped into the nursery. He had removed his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his sleeves were rolled up, revealing the lean, corded muscle of his forearms. He looked exhausted, the lines around his slate-gray eyes etched deeper than before.

He stopped ten feet away, keeping a safe, calculated distance from his son.

"He's asleep?" Dominic asked, his voice low.

"He's calming down," I answered, standing up and facing the mafia boss across the expansive room. "I checked the locks on the windows. They're secure. But Mr. Vale, your son isn't having nightmares. Someone has been inside this house. Someone who knows about the north wing."

Dominic jaw clenched. He walked slowly toward the window, looking out over the rain-slicked iron gates of the estate. "The north wing was my father's domain. When he died three years ago, I sealed it. Concrete poured over the foundation vents, steel plates welded across the inner doors. Nobody gets in there."

"Then how did Noah know what was down there?" I challenged, stepping closer. "How did he describe a man with a serpent ring if there's nothing behind those doors?"

Dominic spun around, his slate-gray eyes flashing with suppressed fury. "You think I want my son terrified in his own home? You think I don't know the risks?" He ran a hand through his dark hair, letting out a frustrated breath. "My father wasn't just a businessman, Miss Clara. He was a paranoid tyrant who made enemies in every corner of the globe. When he died, he left behind a power vacuum—and a series of safehouses built directly into the structural framework of this estate."

"You're saying there's a secret bunker connected to the north wing?" I asked, my breath catching.

"I'm saying my father built a labyrinth beneath our feet, and someone has been using it to play psychological warfare with my family," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Mrs. Gable didn't leave because she was clumsy. She found a door unlocked in the north wing library three nights ago. She saw someone staring back at her through the double-sided mirrors."

My blood ran cold. "And you didn't check it?"

"I checked every square inch of concrete within an hour of her screaming," Dominic replied, stepping uncomfortably close, the sheer physical presence of the man radiating heat and danger. "The perimeter alarms never tripped. The thermal cameras showed zero movement. Whoever was in that mirror vanished into thin air—just like they vanished tonight."

"Then we need to open the north wing," I said firmly.

Dominic let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Open it? To open those doors, we need my father’s biometric override key—a key that was buried with him six feet underground in a sealed lead-lined crypt."
