Chapter 6 - Crawling Through the Dark

The metal ventilation shaft was a claustrophobic nightmare of absolute darkness, choking dust, and the rhythmic thrum-thrum of the estate’s massive heating boilers below. I dragged myself forward on my elbows and knees, the metal scraping against my forearms and tearing the fabric of my blouse. Every breath I took filled my lungs with soot and metallic air, but the image of four-year-old Noah alone in the nursery kept me moving.
Julian is in the house. He has the north wing. He's coming for Noah.
The warnings echoed in my mind like a ticking clock. I rounded a sharp corner in the ductwork, my flashlight beam cutting through the gloom to illuminate a small, rusted junction box labeled SUB-SYSTEM OVERRIDE - NORTH WING / CRYPT.
Thank God.
I scrambled forward, jamming my fingers into the latch of the junction box. The rusted metal resisted, screaming in protest before popping open with a sharp snap. Inside were dozens of color-coded wires and manual toggle switches. I didn't know which one controlled the crypt gate, but I remembered Dominic’s voice: Find the master circuit.
I spotted a heavy lever marked with a faded skull-and-crossbones warning label—the manual emergency hydraulic release.
Grabbing the cold metal lever with both hands, I pulled down with all my weight.
KACHUNK.
A deep, subterranean shudder vibrated through the foundation of the entire mansion. Far below, the sound of heavy hydraulic locks disengaging echoed like a distant cannon shot.
I didn't wait to see if Dominic was free. I turned around in the tight shaft, kicking my way backward through the metal tube until I dropped out of a ceiling vent directly into the dimly lit corridor of the mansion’s ground floor.
I landed hard on my knees, coughing violently as a cloud of dust settled around me. Scrambling to my feet, I sprinted toward the north wing, the brass key clutched tightly in my right hand like a talisman.
The heavy oak double doors of the north wing—the doors that had been welded shut for three years—were standing wide open.
A cold draft swept out from the darkness within, carrying the faint, unmistakable smell of ozone, old cigars, and fresh blood.
"Noah?" I called out, my voice trembling as I stepped across the threshold into the forbidden zone.
The north wing wasn't just a hallway; it was a sprawling, subterranean-style apartment hidden inside the mansion’s framework. Massive bookshelves lined the walls, filled with ledgers detailing illegal offshore accounts, political blackmail notes, and weapons manifests. At the far end of the room stood a massive wall of double-sided mirrors—the exact mirror Mrs. Gable had looked through before she was attacked.
And sitting in a leather armchair in the center of the room, casually swirling a glass of amber scotch, was a man with sharp, patrician features and cold, dead eyes that matched Dominic’s—except for the wicked, jagged scar running from his left ear down to his collar.
Julian Vale.
"Well, well," Julian purred, setting his glass down on a mahogany table. "The little maid has claws. I must admit, I didn't expect you to make it out of the crypt alive. My brother always did have a soft spot for incompetent help."
"Where is Noah?" I demanded, raising a heavy brass paperweight from the desk as a makeshift weapon, my hands shaking uncontrollably.
Julian chuckled, standing up slowly and buttoning the cuffs of his dark silk shirt. "Noah is resting comfortably upstairs, Miss Hayes. But he won't be staying long. You see, the Vale empire belongs to the firstborn. And since Dominic proved incapable of keeping his house in order, I’ve decided to reclaim what is rightfully mine—starting with my nephew."
"You're insane," I hissed, taking a step backward as Julian closed the distance between us with terrifying speed.
"I'm pragmatic," Julian corrected, his voice dropping into a deadly, whispered menace. "And you're standing in my way."
Before I could swing the paperweight, Julian lunged forward like a striking viper. His hand clamped around my wrist with bone-crushing force, sending the heavy brass object clattering to the floor. He twisted my arm behind my back, slamming me hard against the edge of the mahogany desk as the breath exploded from my lungs in a sharp gasp.

"Where is the master key?" Julian hissed in my ear, his breath hot and rancid against my neck. "I know Dominic gave it to you in the crypt. Hand it over, and I might let you walk out of this house with your life."
I gritted my teeth against the blinding pain in my shoulder, my fingers tightening around the cold brass key hidden inside my clenched fist. Never.
