Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Tyrant

While Arthur Sterling and Marcus Holloway were finalizing the paperwork in Leo’s living room, things were unraveling with catastrophic speed down at The Copper Kettle.
It was 11:00 AM, the middle of the morning rush. The restaurant was half-full of regular patrons sipping coffee and eating blueberry pancakes.
Gary Vance stood behind the cash register, his face pale, sweat beading across his forehead. He had tried calling his cousin at the county precinct three times that morning, but every time he dialed, the line went straight to a disconnected recording or a busy signal. The sinking feeling in his stomach was turning into full-scale panic.
Suddenly, the front glass doors swung open with a sharp, heavy thud.
Three men in dark charcoal suits marched into the dining room with absolute, unyielding purpose. Leading them was the regional district supervisor, accompanied by two armed corporate security guards.
Gary’s heart hammered against his ribs. He forced a stiff, nervous smile onto his face and hurried out from behind the counter, wiping his hands on his apron.
"Morning, Director Vance... I mean, Mr. Henderson," Gary stammered, trying to sound jovial. "To what do we owe the pleasure? We’re running a great breakfast shift today, numbers are up—"
The regional director didn't smile. He didn't even stop walking until he stood two feet away from Gary, his eyes cold and dead.
"Gary Vance," the director said loudly enough for every customer in the dining room to hear. "You are hereby stripped of your managerial title, terminated from your employment with immediate effect, and barred from entering any franchise location owned by Sterling-Vance Holdings."
The room went dead silent. Forks stopped midway to mouths.
"Terminated?!" Gary shrieked, his voice cracking in absolute disbelief, his face flushing a bright, furious red. "On what grounds?! I’ve run this restaurant with an iron fist for six years! My numbers are always in the black! You can't just fire me without cause!"
"Cause?" the director sneered, pulling a thick folder from his briefcase and slapping it down onto the cash register counter. "We have twenty-four hours of security footage, employee testimonies regarding systemic wage theft, health code violations you deliberately falsified, and a direct corporate complaint filed at 7:00 AM this morning by the chairman of the board himself."
"The... the chairman?" Gary whispered, the blood completely draining from his face. "Who... who are you talking about?"
"Harrison Vance," the director said, leaning in close. "You threw the founder of this company out into the freezing rain last night because he couldn't pay for a fifteen-dollar plate of brisket. You called him a vagrant."

Gary’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the cash register to keep from collapsing, his vision blurring as the terrifying weight of his catastrophic mistake crashed down upon him. The old man in the frayed wool coat wasn't a crazy retiree. He was the owner. He was the god of the entire corporate universe.
"Pack your things, Gary," the director commanded coldly. "And don't bother asking for a reference. Your career in hospitality is officially over."
