Chapter 9 - A New Chapter at Headquarters

Two weeks later, the crisp air of early December brought a festive, hopeful energy to downtown Pittsburgh.
Leo Carter stood on the forty-fifth floor of the gleaming Sterling-Vance Tower, looking out through towering floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the sprawling panorama of the city below. The skyline looked entirely different from up here—grand, expansive, and full of limitless possibility.
He wore a tailored navy suit, fitted with a crisp white shirt and a silk tie, looking every bit the sharp, confident corporate intern he had officially become.
A soft knock echoed at his open office door.
Leo turned around. Standing in the doorway was Harrison Vance. The billionaire industrialist wore a comfortable tweed jacket, leaning slightly on a polished wooden cane, his slate-blue eyes crinkling at the corners with a warm, genuine smile.
"Afternoon, son," Harrison greeted, walking into the spacious corner office. "How are you settling into the logistics department?"
"It’s incredible, Mr. Vance," Leo smiled, stepping out from behind his mahogany desk. "Mr. Sterling has me reviewing supply-chain efficiency across the entire Mid-Atlantic division. I've learned more in two weeks here than in two semesters of textbooks."
"That’s because theory is worthless without practice," Harrison chuckled, walking over to the window to stand beside Leo. He looked out at the city lights beginning to flicker on against the darkening evening sky. "How is your mother doing? Did the new specialists at the medical center help adjust her treatment plan?"
"She’s doing better than she has in ten years," Leo’s voice thickened with deep, overwhelming emotion. "She slept through the entire night without pain for the first time on Tuesday. She cried when she told me, Mr. Vance. We both did. I... I still don't know how to thank you for everything you've done for us."
Harrison turned his gaze toward the young man, his expression turning serious and profound.
"You don't need to thank me, Leo," Harrison said gently, resting a heavy, calloused hand on Leo’s shoulder. "When I walked into that restaurant, I was an old man testing a broken world, expecting to find only selfishness and greed. Instead, I found a young man working himself to the bone who chose to share his last twenty dollars with a freezing stranger who had nothing."
Harrison pointed a finger toward the sprawling city below them.

"This entire empire was built on a simple premise: that character is our only true currency. You proved your character on a stormy night when no one was watching. Never lose that, Leo. Because that is what will carry you far beyond this office and into a life of true consequence."
Leo nodded, swallowing the lump in his throat as he looked back out at the glowing horizon.
