Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Lockdown

At eleven o'clock that morning, the forty-fifth floor of the Vance Maritime Financial Center on Wall Street was sealed under executive emergency protocols.
The grand thirty-seat boardroom, wrapped in curved architectural glass overlooking the stormy gray expanse of New York Harbor, was packed with the twelve members of the board of directors, six high-priced corporate defense attorneys, and prominent high-society investors.
Victor Vance sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, dressed in a custom pinstripe suit, his diamond cufflinks catching the overhead halogen glare. He was holding a leather-bound corporate ledger, radiating the smug, untouchable arrogance of a man about to finalize the sale of the century.
"Gentlemen," Victor announced, slamming his gold pen onto the table. "We are convening this extraordinary session to ratify the sixty-million-dollar equity acquisition by European Shipping Consortium. With the unfortunate, terminal medical decline of my late brother’s dependent heir, the remaining trust proxies have been consolidated under my sole signature."
The heavy double mahogany doors of the boardroom were kicked open with concussive force.
The two private security guards standing outside were thrown backward into the room as four armed operatives from the DeMarco protective detail strode through the threshold with carbines lowered at the high ready.
Every director at the table froze in sheer, paralyzed terror.
I walked into the boardroom, flanked by Frank Callahan and Detective Raymond Vance of the NYPD Major Crimes Task Force.
I wore a dark charcoal overcoat over my suit, my boots striking the polished parquet floor with measured, unhurried power.
Beside me walked Sarah Vance, dressed in an impeccably tailored navy power suit, her hair styled in an elegant chignon, her posture straight, commanding the room with the quiet, unyielding authority of a rightful matriarch.
Victor jumped to his feet, his chair screeching violently against the floor. "Salvatore DeMarco? What is the meaning of this? This is a private corporate assembly! You have no legal standing to enter my building!"
Frank Callahan stepped forward, placing three thick volumes of certified probate rulings onto the center of the table with a heavy, concussive thud.
"Under the emergency decree issued by United States District Judge Evelyn Montgomery two hours ago, Victor," Callahan announced, his voice booming across the silent room, "the 2024 probate of Thomas Vance has been vacated for premeditated fraud and homicide."
Callahan opened the top folder, projecting the forensic files onto the seventy-foot digital presentation wall.
"The forensic reconstruction of Thomas Vance’s vehicle proves deliberate mechanical sabotage executed by Victor Vance’s private security contractors," Callahan presented. "Furthermore, the State Supreme Court has certified that Caleb Vance is alive, medically restored, and the sole fifty-one percent controlling shareholder of Vance Global Maritime."
Victor’s face drained of every drop of color. He backed against the panoramic glass window, his hands trembling violently. "This... this is an extortion scheme! She’s an unfit mother! She has no business experience!"
I walked slowly down the center of the boardroom, stopping two feet from where Victor stood trembling.
"She doesn't need business experience, Victor," I whispered, my voice dropping into a register of icy, lethal finality. "Because as of 9:00 AM today, Sarah Vance appointed the DeMarco Sovereign Syndicate as the sole executive trustee of her son's estate. And in my world, when someone touches an innocent child, we don't sue them."
I looked into his terrified eyes.
"We erase them."
Detective Raymond Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.

"Victor Vance," Detective Vance announced. "You are under arrest for First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Attempted Capital Murder of a Minor, Corporate Forgery, and Racketeering."
As the steel cuffs snapped around Victor’s wrists, he shrieked in wild, frantic terror, thrashing against the officers as he was dragged down the center aisle of his own boardroom in chains.
