Chapter 6 - Blood and Silk

Consciousness returned to Harper in waves of freezing air and the sharp stench of burning fuel.
"Harper..."
A hand, warm and trembling slightly, touched her cheek.
Harper opened her eyes. The car was on its side. Snow was drifting in through the crushed windshield. Dominic was leaning over her, his body acting as a human shield against the jagged metal of the collapsed roof.
His face was pale. A dark, viscous stain was spreading across the right side of his charcoal vest, soaking the white shirt beneath.
"You're hit," Harper gasped, trying to sit up, her head throbbing.
"Shrapnel. Grazed," Dominic grunted, his jaw tight with pain. "Luca is already securing our extraction down the shoreline. We have two minutes before Romano's cleanup crew arrives to inspect the wreckage."
With a burst of sheer, terrifying willpower, Dominic kicked out the remaining frame of the rear window. He pulled Harper out into the howling blizzard, wrapping his heavy overcoat around her shoulders as the sub-zero wind slashed at their faces.
They slipped down the snowy embankment toward the dark, churning water of the lake, ducking into an unmarked concrete boathouse tucked beneath a private pier. Inside, a hidden steel door opened to Luca’s frantic knock.
It was a fortified safe house—a warm, dimly lit subterranean bunker lined with medical supplies, communications gear, and heavy weapons.
Dominic collapsed onto a leather examination table, his breathing shallow, his eyes darkening with pain.
"Luca," Dominic rasped, "seal the perimeter. Call Enzo. No one gets these coordinates. No one."
"Understood, Boss," Luca said, tossing a suture kit and antiseptic onto a metal tray before running back to the security consoles.
Harper stepped to the table, her hands trembling as she grabbed surgical scissors. She cut away Dominic’s ruined shirt. A jagged three-inch gash ran across his ribs, bleeding heavily.
"You need a hospital," Harper whispered, tears stinging her eyes from shock and terror.
Dominic caught her wrist. His grip was weaker than before, but his eyes were blazing with unyielding steel.
"A hospital is where men in my position go to die, Harper," he said, his voice a low growl. "You did this in the ledger. Now do it here. Clean it. Stitch it."
"I’m an auditor, not a surgeon!"
"You saved my life on that bridge," Dominic said softly, his thumb caressing the pulse point on her wrist. "You are stronger than you think, tesoro. I trust you."
*I trust you.*
The words hit Harper harder than the explosion. A man who ruled an empire built on paranoia and betrayal was placing his life in her shaking hands.
Harper took a deep breath, setting her jaw. She poured antiseptic over the wound—Dominic only tightened his grip on the edge of the table, not a single sound escaping his lips—and began to stitch the torn flesh with steady, methodical precision.
When she finished, bandaging his ribs with sterile gauze, she was drenched in sweat despite the chill in the bunker.
Dominic slowly sat up, his gaze locked onto her face. He reached up, wiping a smear of blood and soot from her cheek with his thumb.
"Why didn't you run?" he asked quietly. "At the Gala. In the garage. On that highway. You could have run."
Harper looked at him—at the silver scar, the ruthless jaw, the eyes that had seen more darkness than she could ever imagine, yet looked at her as if she were the only thing of value in an ocean of blood.
"Because you were protecting my mother," Harper whispered honestly. "And because... I think you're the only honest monster I've ever met."
Dominic let out a low, rough laugh that turned into a groan of pain. He pulled her gently by the waist until she was standing between his knees.
"My father told me that a king who rules with fear is hated, and a king who rules with love is dead," Dominic whispered, his fingers tangling into her hair. "I never believed there was a third option. Until you kissed me in that corridor."

Harper didn't hesitate. She leaned down and pressed her lips to his, gentle this time, careful of his wounds, pouring every ounce of fear, passion, and defiance into the kiss. Dominic pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her waist like an unbreakable promise amidst the storm raging outside.
