Chapter 7 - The Viper Unmasked

Dawn crept through the reinforced slit windows of the lakeside bunker.

The storm had passed, leaving Chicago blanketed in two feet of pristine, white snow that masked the violence of the night before. Inside, the screens on the central console hummed with high-frequency encrypted intercepts.

Harper sat beside Dominic, wrapped in a black cashmere sweater he had given her from the safe house armory. Her laptop was wired directly into the syndicate's mainframe.

"Look at this timestamp," Harper said, pointing to a data packet that had pinged a cell tower near Navy Pier at four in the morning. "The leak didn't come from Julian Bellini alone."

Dominic, his ribs tightly bound beneath a fresh black dress shirt, leaned over her shoulder. His face was a mask of cold fury. "Explain."

"Bellini authorized the port permits, yes," Harper explained, her fingers dancing across the keys. "But the authorization codes required a secondary cryptographic key held only by someone inside your personal household. Someone who had physical access to your private study at Villa Russo."

Luca turned from the surveillance monitors, his face grim. "Enzo."

Dominic stood up slowly, the silence in the room turning suffocating.

"Enzo has served my family for forty years," Dominic said, each word dropping like lead. "He held me when my father was murdered."

"Then look at his offshore portfolio," Harper said quietly, pulling up a series of numbered accounts in the Bahamas. "Two million dollars transferred from a shell entity owned by Victor Romano, deposited three days after your father died twelve years ago. And another five million deposited yesterday morning."

Dominic stared at the glowing numbers on the screen. The betrayal was complete. Enzo hadn't just turned yesterday; he was the architect who had helped Romano murder Dominic's father to install a young, manageable heir—only Dominic had proven far too lethal to control.

"He played the loyal mentor for twelve years," Dominic murmured, his voice deadly quiet. "Waiting for the right moment to finish the bloodline."

A red alert flashed across the perimeter monitors.

On the live video feed, three black sedans pulled up to the surface entrance of the boathouse pier. The front door of the lead vehicle opened, and Enzo stepped out, flanked by eight heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear without insignia.

"They traced the Maybach's emergency transponder," Luca said, racking the bolt of an assault rifle. "Enzo has the master overrides for the bunker blast doors."

"Let him open them," Dominic said calmly, drawing his sidearm from the table.

Harper stood up, her heart racing, but this time she didn't cower. She reached to the table and picked up a compact Glock 19 that Luca had laid out earlier. She checked the magazine and racked the slide just as Luca had shown her two hours ago.

Dominic looked at her, a glimmer of dark pride igniting in his gray eyes.

"Stay behind me, tesoro," he said softly.

"Not behind," Harper replied, her gaze meeting his with absolute resolve. "Beside you."
