Chapter 8 - The Downfall of Vance Wealth

"You can't do this! Do you know who my family is?!" Eleanor shrieked, scrambling backward across the leather desk as two state troopers stepped forward, heavy steel handcuffs rattling in the dim light. "We built this city! We own the judges! You can't arrest a Vance!"

"Mrs. Vance, you have the right to remain silent," Captain Reed recited coldly, his face an unmoving mask of professional disgust as he snapped the cold steel cuffs around her frail, trembling wrists. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Neil stood paralyzed in the center of the room as a trooper grabbed his arms, forcing them behind his back. He didn't fight. He didn't yell. He simply stared at me with wide, uncomprehending eyes, his lips trembling as the silver metal clamped around his wrists.

"Clara..." Neil whispered, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Clara, please... tell them it's a misunderstanding. We have a family. You can't let them take me..."

I adjusted Toby in my arms, patting his back gently to soothe his crying, and looked down at my husband with a cold, hollow emptiness where love used to live.

"You threatened to take my baby away, Neil," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet study. "You and your mother tried to poison him. You signed your own sentence the second you handed that can to the trash bin."

The troopers hauled Neil and Eleanor toward the shattered doorway, their expensive shoes dragging across the Persian rug. As they were led out into the grand foyer past flashing red and blue police cruisers parked outside, the heavy iron front doors slammed shut behind them, sealing the doom of the Vance dynasty.

Mark walked over to me, his expression softening instantly as he reached out to stroke Toby’s little foot. "Are you alright, sis? Did they hurt you?"

"We're fine, Mark," I breathed, a massive wave of exhaustion and relief finally washing over my shoulders. "Thank God you intercepted my cloud upload before Neil wiped his laptop."

"When you sent me that video of the Cyrillic warning label and the transcript of his draft petition, I didn't waste a second," Mark smiled grimly, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe sweat from his brow. "I bypassed local jurisdiction, went straight to the state attorney general, and secured emergency warrants under the child protection act. They’re never seeing the outside of a cell."

We walked out of the mansion together, stepping out into the cool evening air. The oppressive weight of Eleanor’s estate felt lighter now, scrubbed clean by the absolute, unyielding power of the truth.
