Chapter 2 - The Taste of Retribution

The kiss was not hesitant. It was a declaration of war.
When his lips met hers, Claire gasped, a jolt of pure electricity surging through her veins. It wasn't the soft, predictable affection Grant had offered her over four years of comfortable, stagnant romance. This was heavy, commanding, and utterly intoxicating. It tasted like dark espresso, expensive whiskey, and absolute, unapologetic power.
For a second, Claire’s mind whirred out of control. She was kissing a total stranger in the shadows of a luxury hotel hallway while two hundred of the city’s most powerful people applauded her cheating ex-fiancé just fifty feet away.
It was insane. It was suicidal.
It was the most liberating thing she had ever done in her entire life.
Her fingers tightened on his lapel, crumpling the fine Italian wool. She kissed him back, pouring every ounce of her humiliation, her rage, and her shattered heart into the movement. She wanted to brand him. She wanted him to remember her.
Slowly, deliberately, the man pulled back.
He didn't release her face. His thumb lingered on her lower lip, stroking it with a hypnotic, possessive rhythm. His dark eyes burned down into hers, glowing with an inferno that had nothing to do with romance and everything to do with dominance.
“You wanted to shock them,” he murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration against her skin. “Is this enough, or should I pick you up and carry you out of here right now?”
Claire let out a breathless, jagged laugh. The hysteria bubbling inside her chest was rapidly turning into something sharp and lethal.
“Who are you?” she whispered, her fingers still clutching his jacket.
Before he could answer, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open with a resounding thud.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” a booming voice echoed through the speaker system—Grant’s father, Arthur Mercer, radiant with corporate pride. “If I could have your attention for a brief announcement regarding the Willow Crest acquisition, and the brilliant minds that brought our families together—”
The spotlight from the ballroom spilled out into the hallway, cutting a harsh white beam across the carpet.
Grant emerged from the side entrance, scanning the room with a tight, panicky smile, looking for Claire. He stopped dead in his tracks.
The light hit them directly.
There stood Claire Bennett, the bride left at the altar of corporate ambition, wrapped in the arms of a towering stranger, her lips flushed and bruised from a kiss that was dripping with unmistakable intimacy.
And not just any stranger.
As Grant’s eyes adjusted to the glare of the hallway lights, the color drained completely from his face. His carefully cultivated smile shattered like cheap glass. His jaw went slack.
“Vane,” Grant choked out, his voice cracking with a terror so profound it borderlined on pathetic. “Mr... Mr. Vane.”
Claire froze. The name hit her ears like a physical blow.
*Vane.*
Damon Vane.
The name echoed through the dark corridors of Chicago’s underworld and corporate empire alike. The man who owned half the downtown high-rises, the man whose shadow loomed over every legal and illegal enterprise from the Gold Coast to the docks. The man parents warned their children about. The most feared crime boss in the Midwest.
Claire slowly turned her head back to look up at the man holding her face.
Damon Vane didn't look at Grant. His gaze remained fixed entirely on Claire, a dark, dangerous amusement playing at the corners of his mouth.
Slowly, deliberately, Damon turned his head toward the pale, trembling Grant Mercer.
“Your fiancée dropped something, Mercer,” Damon said, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the diamond engagement ring Claire had discarded in the fern, and dropped it onto the carpet with a sharp, echoing *clink*.

“And I believe,” Damon continued, stepping protectively in front of Claire, “she’s no longer on the market.”
