Chapter 3 - The Predator’s Protection

The silence in the hallway was so absolute you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents three floors up.

Arthur Mercer stepped out of the ballroom, champagne flute still in hand, his booming corporate laugh dying in his throat as he took in the tableau. His eyes darted from his trembling son to the imposing, obsidian-suited figure of Damon Vane, and finally to Claire, whose posture had miraculously transformed from broken victim to untouchable queen.

“Mr... Mr. Vane,” Arthur stammered, his face flushing a mottled, unhealthy red. “I—we didn’t realize you were attending tonight. I wasn’t aware you had business with the Mercer family.”

Damon didn't look at Arthur. Men of Damon Vane’s stature didn't look down at subordinates unless they were preparing to crush them. He kept his large, warm hand securely on the small of Claire’s back, a clear physical barrier between her and the pathetic wreckage of her past life.

“I didn't,” Damon replied smoothly, his voice devoid of warmth. “Until I found Ms. Bennett crying in the dark. And let me tell you, Arthur—I hate to see things that belong to me go to waste.”

Claire’s breath hitched. *Belong to me?*

She shot a sideways glance at Damon. He hadn't asked her permission to claim her, but standing here, watching Grant shrink into a quivering puddle of cowardice, she realized she didn't mind at all. In fact, a dark, vicious thrill rushed through her veins.

Grant finally found his voice, though it sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. “Claire... please. Let’s not make a scene. Let’s go inside and talk about this like adults—”

“Adults?” Natalie pushed her way past Grant, her silk dress rustling, her face twisted in an ugly mix of jealousy and panic. She had finally realized the gravity of the situation. You could cheat on your sister, you could steal her fiancé, you could even steal a multi-million-dollar vineyard deal—but you did not draw the attention of Damon Vane. “Claire, stop being dramatic! You’re making a fool of yourself over some random thug—”

“Shut your mouth, Natalie,” Claire said. Her voice wasn't loud. It wasn't hysterical. It was cold, sharp, and carried the weight of a guillotine blade.

Natalie recoiled as if she had been physically struck.

Damon chuckled, a low, dark sound that vibrated against Claire’s spine. “Listen to your sister, little girl,” Damon advised softly, his dark eyes locking onto Natalie with a look so chilling that the younger sister instantly shrank back behind Grant. “You have no idea what you’re playing with.”

“Mr. Vane,” Arthur Mercer tried again, sweating profusely now, wiping his brow with a silk handkerchief. “Surely there’s been a misunderstanding. The Willow Crest deal—the partnership between the Mercers and the Bennetts—it’s crucial for the city’s economy. Claire has put her heart into it—”

“Claire *did* put her heart into it,” Damon interrupted, his tone hardening into steel. “And your son and his little mistress decided to stab her in the back twelve minutes before the curtain went up.”

Arthur whipped his head around to stare at Grant and Natalie, his eyes bulging. “You did *what*?”

“Dad, I can explain—” Grant stammered, raising his hands defensively.

“Save it for the bankruptcy court,” Damon said casually. He looked down at Claire, his expression softening just a fraction—enough for only her to notice. “Are you ready to leave, Ms. Bennett? Or would you like to watch these clowns implode on their own?”

Claire looked at Grant. She looked at Natalie. She looked at the father who had spent years treating her like an unpaid intern in her own family’s legacy.

Then she looked up into the dark, unfathomable eyes of the most dangerous man in Chicago.

“Take me out of here, Damon,” she said clearly.

“With pleasure,” he murmured.

As Damon led her away down the grand marble corridor toward the private exit, leaving the wreckage of the Mercer family screaming behind them, Claire knew her old life was dead. But as she felt the firm, protective grip of Chicago’s underworld king guiding her steps, she realized her new life was going to be an absolute masterpiece of vengeance.
