Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Six months later.
The sun hung low over the Pacific Ocean, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and deep crimson.
A sleek, state-of-the-art yacht cut smoothly through the turquoise waters just off the coast of Catalina Island. A gentle ocean breeze caught the salt spray, carrying the faint scent of cedar, bourbon, and expensive perfume.
Beatrice Gallagher stood at the helm, her hands steady on the polished teak steering wheel. She wore a simple white linen sundress, the wind whipping her dark hair around her shoulders. There was no shapewear, no dark colors to make herself smaller, no forced smiles for cameras.
She was entirely, unapologetically herself.
From the rear deck, the sound of low laughter drifted over the water. Julian Vance sat at a small table, sipping a glass of wine while reviewing architectural plans for a new community center funded entirely by the newly restructured Gallagher Foundation—now dedicated to supporting women escaping abusive, high-society households.
Judge Thomas Gallagher was currently serving a fifteen-year sentence in a federal penitentiary upstate, while Alistair Vance’s corporate syndicate had been thoroughly dismantled by federal prosecutors and internal Vance family restructuring.
The past was buried beneath fathoms of cold Pacific water.
Julian walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. His touch wasn't a cage. It was a shelter.
“How’s the captain doing?” Julian asked softly, pressing a kiss to her temple.
Beatrice smiled, tilting her head back to look up into his grey eyes, which shone with warmth and fierce devotion.
She lifted her right hand from the steering wheel. On her finger, the heavy platinum band with its deep-red ruby caught the golden rays of the setting sun, glowing like a beacon of absolute triumph.

“Never better,” Beatrice whispered.
She turned the wheel slightly, steering the yacht directly toward the open horizon, where the sea met the sky in an endless, beautiful expanse of freedom.
