Chapter 4 - The Vance Estate

The Maybach turned off the highway, winding through the heavily wooded, fog-drenched cliffs of Cape Ann, far north of Boston. Wrought-iron gates, spiked and formidable, swung open automatically as the car approached, welcoming them into an estate that looked less like a home and more like a modern fortress of glass, steel, and dark stone.

The car came to a smooth halt beneath a grand portico. Marcus opened the door instantly.

“Welcome to the cliff house, Miss Gallagher,” Marcus said, his voice flat and professional.

Beatrice stepped out of the car, clutching Julian’s oversized coat around her. The Atlantic Ocean crashed against the jagged rocks far below, the sound of the waves echoing through the foggy night like a distant drumbeat.

Julian led her through massive double doors into a foyer that was breathtaking in its minimalist grandeur. Polished dark marble floors reflected the warm glow of recessed lighting. There were no family portraits here, no sentimental heirlooms—only stark, powerful abstract art and the towering glass walls looking out into the churning black ocean.

“Mrs. Higgins!” Julian called out, his voice cutting through the cavernous space.

A sharp-faced, impeccably dressed older woman with silver hair tied back in a severe bun appeared from a hallway. Her eyes swept over Beatrice—the ruined dress, the bare feet, the oversized men’s coat—in a fraction of a second. She didn't gasp. She didn't judge.

“Mr. Vance. Good Lord,” Mrs. Higgins said, her voice clipped and efficient. “Shall I prepare the west suite?”

“Prepare the master wing,” Julian corrected smoothly.

Mrs. Higgins paused, a flicker of surprise crossing her stern features before she masked it completely. “Right away, sir.”

“Wait,” Beatrice interrupted, her voice ringing out clearly in the silent foyer. She stood tall, pulling Julian’s coat tighter. “I am not your prisoner, Mr. Vance. I need to use a phone. I need to figure out my next move. I can’t just disappear into your fortress.”

Julian stopped walking toward the grand staircase and turned around. He crossed his arms, looking down at her with a mixture of amusement and respect.

“You think you can just check into a Hilton tomorrow morning, Beatrice?” Julian asked, his tone laced with grim reality. “Your face is currently plastered across every local news channel as the ‘Distraught Bride Who Fled Her Wedding.’ Your mother is probably weeping on live television about mental health struggles. And Arthur’s business associates are searching every hospital, hotel, and bus station between here and New York.”

Beatrice opened her mouth to argue, but the words died in her throat. He was right. She was trapped.

“If you walk out those front doors right now,” Julian continued, taking a slow step toward her, closing the distance between them, “within two hours you’ll be picked up by your father’s men—or worse, by the men who killed Arthur to get this back.” He tapped the pocket where the heavy ring rested. “Here, you are invisible. But more importantly…”

Julian leaned down slightly, his voice dropping to a low, hypnotic register.

“...you are armed.”

Beatrice looked down at her right thumb. The heavy platinum band seemed to pulse with a dark, alluring energy.

“What do you want from me, Julian?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly as she used his first name for the first time. “People don't shelter runaway brides out of the goodness of their hearts, especially not men like you.”

“No, they don't,” Julian admitted freely, a dark shadow passing over his grey eyes. “I want the rat inside my organization. And you? You want your freedom. You want your inheritance back from the trust your father and Arthur tried to steal. And most importantly… you want payback.”

Beatrice stared at him, the bitter memories of the wedding reception flashing through her mind—Arthur’s cruel whisper about the yacht in Catalina, her mother’s constant criticisms, her father’s cold, transactional gaze.

She didn't want to run anymore.

“Show me to my room,” Beatrice said, her voice steady and clear.
