Chapter 8 - The Press Conference

The ground-floor auditorium of Bennett & Associates Corporate Holdings was packed to capacity.
More than a hundred journalists, financial analysts, and television camera crews crowded into the oak-paneled hall, their flashes popping continuously like distant summer lightning. Microphones from Bloomberg, CNBC, CNN, and the Wall Street Journal formed a thick forest of metal across the mahogany podium at the front of the room.
At 10:00 AM sharp, the side door opened.
Grace Bennett walked out onto the stage.
She was wearing a tailored navy-blue pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, elegant chignon. There was no hesitation in her stride, no sign of the stress or betrayal that had threatened to tear her life apart just weeks earlier. She carried herself with the absolute, unshakeable poise of a leader who had weathered the worst storm imaginable and emerged stronger on the other side.
The camera shutters fired in a deafening frenzy.
Grace stepped up to the podium, resting her hands lightly on the edges of the wooden stand. She adjusted the microphone, and the auditorium fell instantly, completely silent.
“Good morning,” Grace began, her voice clear, resonant, and carrying effortlessly across the hall. “Thank you for being here today.”
A reporter from the *Wall Street Journal* raised his hand immediately. “Ms. Bennett, given the recent federal indictments against former CEO Ethan Cole and the massive restructuring of corporate debt, can you confirm whether Cole-Bennett Hospitality is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy?”
Grace looked directly into the camera lens.
“No, we are not filing for bankruptcy,” she said calmly. “Effective as of 8:00 AM this morning, Cole-Bennett Hospitality has officially rebranded as *Bennett & Associates Corporate Holdings*. All legacy debt associated with fraudulent asset acquisition has been fully restructured through independent institutional backing, and our liquidity reserves are currently at their highest point in five years.”
Another hand shot up from the front row—a reporter from Bloomberg. “Ms. Bennett, market analysts are calling this one of the most remarkable corporate takeovers in recent history. But many are wondering: how did you uncover the financial irregularities while serving as a silent partner during your marriage?”
Grace paused for a fraction of a second. A faint, knowing smile touched the corners of her lips.
“When you build a house from the ground up,” Grace said steadily, “you learn every brick, every beam, and every hidden foundation wall. You don't need to look at the blueprints to know when someone is trying to tear down the load-bearing pillars from the inside. You simply step out of the way, let the roof fall in on them, and start building something better.”
The auditorium erupted into a wave of murmured commentary and rapid-fire questions, but Grace didn't blink.
She answered each question with clinical precision, absolute transparency, and undeniable authority. By the time the press conference concluded twenty minutes later, financial analysts across Wall Street were already rewriting their morning market reports.
Ethan Cole was no longer a name associated with the company.
