Chapter 5 - The Cleansing of the Board

At 9:00 a.m. on Monday, the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Cross Hospitality Tower in downtown Boston was convened for an emergency plenary session.
The thirty-two senior directors, international hotel operators, and labor union representatives sat around the sixty-foot mahogany conference table in dead, breathless silence.
The morning front-page headlines of The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal lay spread across the polished table, every banner dominated by the same earth-shattering revelation:
HALE DYNASTY ARRESTED AT WEDDING ALTAR: HOTEL MAGNATE EXPOSES $45M ARSON CONSPIRACY AND PREMEDITATED HOMICIDE.
When the double frosted-glass doors slid open, every single executive in the room stood up in unison.
Nathaniel Cross walked into the boardroom, dressed in an immaculate bespoke navy wool three-piece suit, his posture radiating total, uncontested dominance.
Walking beside him, holding her head high with quiet, elegant dignity, was Rebecca Cross.
Following behind them were Arthur Ross, Detective Robert Miller, and Marcus Bennett, carrying four heavy aluminum Pelican cases containing the unsealed Delaware forensic ledgers.
Nathaniel walked to the head of the table—the seat his father had built forty years earlier. He pulled out the executive chair, placing his hands flat on the polished wood, looking around the room with piercing, unshakeable clarity.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Nathaniel began, his deep baritone cutting through the suffocating tension like a drawn razor. "Item one on today's agenda is the formal, permanent termination of all joint ventures, commercial leases, and management contracts previously allocated to the Hale Corporation."
The directors nodded in rapid, unanimous agreement, every single director signing the emergency restructuring resolutions without a single objection.
"Item two," Nathaniel continued, looking around the table with cold, penetrating clarity. "The eighty million dollars in structural liabilities associated with the Grand Meridian property has been fully satisfied through the federal seizure of the Hale family's private real estate holdings and offshore accounts."
The labor union delegates and hotel managers stood up, the room erupting into spontaneous, standing applause that echoed off the glass walls overlooking Boston Harbor.
"And item three," Nathaniel added, turning to Marcus Bennett. "The Grand Meridian in Providence will be completely demolished and rebuilt as the Bennett Memorial Harbor Resort & Safety Training Academy, endowed with fifty million dollars in permanent capital, providing state-of-the-art engineering safety certifications and comprehensive healthcare for all five thousand hospitality workers in our network."

The entire boardroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
Nathaniel closed the master leather ledger with a sharp, definitive thud. "The meeting is adjourned. Let's get our company back to work."
