Chapter 1 - The Shadows of the Estate

The heavy iron gates of the Sterling manor always seemed to close with a finality that chilled the marrow. Standing outside on the rain-slicked pavement, Clara clutched her trench coat tightly around her shoulders, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Inside those towering limestone walls lived Maya Sterling, a woman whose charity work graced the society columns while her cold, calculating cruelty governed everyone beneath her roof. Clara knew the rumors. Everyone in the affluent enclave of Oakridge knew them. But knowing them in theory and witnessing them in the freezing reality of a November midnight were two entirely different agonies.
Across the street, standing beneath the flickering amber glow of a municipal streetlamp, Marcus wiped the rain from his glasses with the edge of his woolen scarf. He was a night-shift logistics manager whose car had broken down three blocks away, forcing him to take a shortcut past the Sterling estate. Beside him stood Elena, a neighborhood baker who had been walking home from a late inventory check. Neither of them planned to be here. Neither of them expected to see the grand side gates swing open in the dead of night.
The storm was violent, howling through the ancient oaks and driving sheets of freezing rain sideways, creating a thick, blinding gray curtain that swallowed the streetlights. It was the kind of storm people used to hide secrets, believing the thunder would muffle sound and the deluge would wash away footprints.
From their vantage point, Marcus and Elena watched a figure emerge from the service entrance of the mansion. It was Maya Sterling, wrapped in an expensive mink coat, her silver hair pulled back into a severe bun that defied the gale. But she wasn't walking alone. Half-dragging, half-carrying a small, limp form was the matriarch, her face twisted in an expression of bitter, venomous hatred.
Elena gasped, clutching Marcus’s arm so hard her fingernails dug through his coat. "Is that... is that a child?"
Before Marcus could answer, Maya reached the large green municipal waste bins lined up against the exterior brick wall of the estate's service alley. With a swift, callous shove, the wealthy grandmother lifted the small form and dropped it directly into the metal bin, slamming the heavy lid down with a metallic crash that echoed sharply over the roar of the wind.
Maya stood there for a second, brushing her hands off as if she had just handled garbage, before turning and marching back toward the mansion, the heavy iron gate clicking shut behind her.

"Did you... did you just see what I think you saw?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling with horror as she began stepping off the curb, her boots splashing through the puddles toward the alley.
Marcus pulled his phone from his pocket instinctively, his thumb swiping across the screen. "I caught the tail end of it," he said, his breath hitching as he checked his camera roll. "The flash didn't go off, but the night-sight feature is on. I got her dumping the bin. I think... I think I caught the whole thing on video."
