Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Witness

Every head turned toward the doorway. The woman who had just entered was Eleanor Vance, a retired federal magistrate and former chief prosecutor for the state district court, whose reputation for destroying corrupt elites was legendary. At seventy-two, Eleanor still commanded a room with a single glance. She was Maya Sterling’s fiercest lifelong rival—and the one person in Oakridge whom Maya truly feared.
Maya’s composed, untouchable demeanor fractured for a fraction of a second, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "Eleanor. This is a private family matter. You have no business here."
"Family matter?" Eleanor scoffed loudly, walking past the police officer without a second glance and tossing her manila folder onto the bakery counter with a sharp slap of leather against wood. "Attempted murder of a minor isn't a family matter, Maya. It's a federal felony."
Officer Miller blinked nervously, recognizing the retired judge instantly. "Judge Vance... with all due respect, there's no physical evidence of a crime. The gentleman's phone data was wiped, and—"
"Wiped?" Eleanor interrupted with a dry, knowing chuckle, opening her leather briefcase and pulling out a heavy, professional-grade tablet device. "Did you really think Marcus was the only person with a smart-home security camera facing the east alley, Miller? My private residence backs up directly against the Sterling estate's service wall. My exterior security array records uncompressed 4K footage directly to a localized, offline, militarized-grade hard drive that cannot be intercepted by cellular signal blockers or remote hacks."
Maya’s face lost every shred of color. Her powdered skin turned a sickly, chalky gray, and her manicured fingers clenched so hard into the fabric of her mink coat that her knuckles turned white.
"Play it, Judge," Marcus urged, stepping forward.
Eleanor tapped the tablet screen. A split second later, the bakery's front television screen—linked via Bluetooth to her tablet—flickered to life.
Crystal-clear, high-definition footage filled the screen. It showed Maya Sterling dragging little Lily through the service gate, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated malice. It clearly captured Maya lifting the child, dropping her into the municipal bin, slamming the lid down, and walking away without a single ounce of remorse. The audio captured the heavy thud of the metal lid and Lily’s terrified, muffled cries.
The entire shop fell dead silent. Officer Miller stared at the screen, his jaw dropping open, before slowly turning his head to look directly at Maya.
"Well, Mrs. Sterling," Miller said, his voice hardening instantly. "It looks like your granddaughter's imagination was remarkably accurate after all."
Maya backed away toward the door, her eyes darting frantically toward her chauffeur. "It's a conspiracy! These people doctored this video—"

"Save it for the federal grand jury, Maya," Eleanor snapped, nodding to Miller. "Arrest her."
Before Maya could reach the door, Officer Miller stepped forward, firmly taking her arm and clicking the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. The untouchable matriarch of Oakridge was finally caught in the inescapable web of her own cruelty.
