Chapter 8 - The Federal Indictment and the Grand Jury

Six months later, the United States District Court in downtown Chicago convened for the formal trial proceedings of The United States versus Marcus Vance, Adrien Vale, and Apex Logistics.
The trial drew intense international media coverage, dominating the front pages of every major publication, exposing the chilling reality of corporate espionage, arms trafficking, and predatory domestic framing that had operated behind high-society boardrooms.
Vincent and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery dressed in tailored dark wool coats, holding hands firmly. Molly remained at the Lake Forest estate, playing safely in the spring gardens with Mrs. Gable, Dr. Sarah Lin, and Barnaby.
Marcus Vance and Adrien Vale sat at the defense table in matching orange federal inmate jumpsuits.
The transformation was absolute.
Without their bespoke suits, private yachts, and manufactured arrogance, the conspirators looked like hollow, broken phantoms, their hands and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step.
Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented one hundred and twelve exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the cloned keycard data, the unedited video confessions, and the digital recording from the silver Olympus dictation machine.
When Marcus Reed presented the final exhibit—the physical Olympus recorder with its scratched silver casing—the entire courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush.
"An eight-year-old child with an old recorder saw what sixty adult corporate directors refused to see," Marcus Reed told the jury, his voice ringing with profound moral clarity. "She exposed a multi-million-dollar conspiracy of treason before an innocent mother could be destroyed in the dark."
The federal jury took exactly twenty-four minutes to return a true bill across all forty-two felony counts.
Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the maximum statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:
"Marcus Vance, Adrien Vale, you committed acts of monstrous, calculated cruelty against an innocent family to satisfy an insatiable, criminal greed," Judge Montgomery declared. "You are hereby sentenced to Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute."
The gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

Marcus and Adrien collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in bitter, total ruin as the armed federal marshals moved in to drag them down the subterranean holding corridor forever.
Vincent and I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Special Agent Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright spring sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
