Chapter 2 - The Lockdown of the Grand Ballroom

The name Marchetti fell upon the grand ballroom like an artillery shell detonating in an enclosed vault.
Senator Julian Porter dropped his crystal tumbler of scotch. The heavy glass bounced off the carpet, splashing dark liquor across his tailored tuxedo trousers as his weathered, patrician face drained of every ounce of color.
"Marchetti...?" the Senator choked out, his hands trembling as he backed toward the marble pillars of the terrace. "Vincent Marchetti's daughter is dead! She died in the Palermo yacht explosion five years ago!"
"Vincent Marchetti doesn't leave his loose ends to die on boats, Senator," Daniel replied, his voice cutting through the room with the lethal finality of a closing iron vault.
Daniel raised his left hand, snapping his fingers once.
The sound echoed like a gunshot.
From the four corners of the grand ballroom, eighteen armed operators from the Ashford Sovereign Security Unit stepped from behind the velvet draperies, racking the bolts of their automatic weapons in unison.
The heavy mahogany double doors at the front entrance swung shut with a concussive hydraulic hiss, followed instantly by the heavy, mechanical clank of electronic biometric deadbolts engaging throughout the four-story mansion.
"Nobody leaves," Daniel announced, his deep baritone carrying across the two hundred frozen guests with absolute, uncontested dominance. "Cellular jammers are active. The perimeter is sealed. Anyone who reaches for a device or attempts to approach a window will be eliminated where they stand."
The room erupted into terrified, muffled gasps. Several high-society women sank onto their chairs, clutching their pearls, while banking executives and municipal judges stared at the polished floorboards, terrified to catch Daniel’s eye.
Daniel turned to his chief lieutenant, a broad-shouldered Sicilian named Marco who had served the Ashford family for thirty years.
"Marco," Daniel commanded.
"Yes, Don Daniel?"
"Secure the Senator and his daughter in the west library. Confiscate their communications, their jewelry, and their vehicle keys. If either of them attempts to speak to the guests, use cable restraints."
"No! You cannot do this to a United States Senator!" Julian Porter roared, his aristocratic voice cracking into a shrill, desperate panic as two six-foot-four guards seized him by the elbows. "I have immunity! The Governor is attending a reception at my club tonight! If I am detained, federal marshals will breach this estate before midnight!"
"The federal marshals won't be coming to rescue you, Julian," a calm, cultured voice spoke from the grand staircase.
Arthur Ross—seventy-two years old, silver-haired, impeccably tailored in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, carrying a red-tabbed leather litigation portfolio—descended the stairs with unhurried precision. As the chief corporate litigator and sovereign counsel for the Ashford syndicate for four decades, Arthur had buried three district attorneys and rewritten the maritime commercial codes of New York.
Arthur stepped to Daniel’s side, opening his leather portfolio to reveal an unsealed federal warrant stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
"Senator Porter," Arthur Ross announced, his baritone booming through the vaulted hall. "At seven-fifteen this evening, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice unsealed twenty-four indictments regarding enterprise treason, commercial maritime sabotage, and the attempted assassination of Daniel Ashford under Cause Number 26-CR-8812."
Arthur turned to Daniel, handing him a thin, encrypted titanium tablet.
"The paper trail is complete, Daniel," Arthur reported. "The Porter family didn't just try to poison you tonight. They have been running a joint liquidation protocol with the Chicago syndicate for eighteen months."
Daniel looked down at the tablet, his slate-gray eyes flashing with cold, unyielding fire.

He turned to me, his arm wrapping firmly around my waist, pulling me securely against his side as if I were already an indispensable part of his fortress.
"Let’s go to my study, Emily," Daniel whispered, his lips brushing the crown of my head. "It’s time to find out why your father sent you to save my life."
