Chapter 10 - A NEW DAWN

Six months later.

The Moretti mansion in Chicago had been completely restored. The bloodstains were gone; the shattered chandeliers had been replaced with warm, modern lighting; the old portraits of ruthless, dead ancestors had been moved to the private archives.

In their place, the grand gallery was filled with vibrant watercolor paintings, photographs of summer trips to Lake Como, and framed pictures of Isabella smiling with her father and me.

Dominic Falcone’s empire in New York had collapsed into federal indictments following the financial evidence Luca and Roberto turned over to the Department of Justice through anonymous channels. The Bellini name had been wiped from the city’s ledgers forever. Chicago was peaceful, stable, and under the absolute, unchallenged protection of Luca Moretti.

Down in the greenhouse—the very place where Elena had hidden the silver key—the roses were in full, glorious bloom.

Isabella sat on a stone bench, wearing a bright yellow sundress, helping her grandmother—my mother, who was now in complete, cancer-free remission—plant white lilies.

“Look, Grandma!” Isabella giggled, holding up a blooming rose. “Daddy said these were Mommy Elena’s favorites. And now they're Emily’s favorites too!”

My mother smiled, her cheeks healthy and pink, kissing Isabella’s forehead. “They are beautiful, sweetheart. Just like this family.”

Standing on the terrace above the gardens, I leaned against the stone balustrade, watching them with tears of gratitude shining in my eyes.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind.

Luca pulled me back against his chest. He was wearing an open-collared white linen shirt and tailored slate trousers, his dark hair ruffled by the warm spring breeze. He looked younger, the crushing darkness that had once haunted his eyes replaced by a quiet, unshakable peace.

He kissed the side of my neck, right over the faint, almost invisible scar left from that terrifying night in the cellar.

“You're thinking too much,” he murmured against my ear.

“I’m just thinking about how different my life was a year ago,” I whispered, turning around in his embrace and resting my hands on his broad chest. “I was scrubbing your floors, Luca. I was terrified of speaking to you.”

Luca chuckled, the deep, rich sound sending pleasant vibrations straight to my heart. “And now you run this house. You run my accountants. And my capos are more afraid of disappointing you than they are of getting shot by me.”

“They should be,” I teased, tilting my head up. “I have much better aim than Marco.”

Luca’s smile softened into an expression of pure, breathtaking devotion. He reached into his pocket.

He didn't pull out a gun. He didn't pull out a ledger.

He pulled out a small black velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

Luca opened the box. Resting on the velvet was a ring carved from platinum, set with a stunning emerald cut diamond flanked by two smaller sapphires—the exact color of Elena’s favorite flowers and Isabella’s eyes.

Tucked beside the ring was the silver key.

“Luca...” I breathed, my hand flying to my mouth.

“Elena left that key to save Bella,” Luca said softly, his voice trembling with a rare, profound vulnerability. “She wanted Roberto to find someone who could love our daughter without conditions. She wanted Bella to have a mother who would stand between her and the monsters of this world.”

He took my left hand in his, his calloused thumb gently stroking my ring finger.

“You walked into this house with nothing, Emily. And you gave me back my soul. You gave Isabella her childhood back. You gave us a home.”

Down in the gardens, Isabella and my mother looked up toward the terrace, both of them beaming with huge, knowing smiles.

Luca looked deep into my eyes, the mob boss completely surrendering to the man who loved me.

“I don't offer you a peaceful life, Emily. There will always be shadows at the edges of our world. But I swear on my blood, on my honor, and on Elena’s memory, that I will spend every breath left in my body cherishing you, protecting you, and loving you as my equal.”

He lifted the diamond ring from the velvet.

“Will you marry me, Emily Carter? Will you be my wife, Isabella’s mother, and the Queen of this family?”

Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and joyous, washing away the final lingering ghosts of our past.

I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face against his throat, laughing through my tears.

“Yes,” I whispered against his skin. “A thousand times yes, Luca.”

Luca let out a triumphant laugh, lifting me off my feet and spinning me around the terrace beneath the brilliant Chicago sun. He slipped the diamond onto my finger; it fit perfectly, a radiant circle of unbroken promise.

Below us, Isabella cheered, running up the marble stairs with a bouquet of fresh white lilies, throwing herself into our arms as Luca pulled us both against his heart.

The silver key remained in Luca’s pocket, no longer a keeper of dark and deadly secrets, but a reminder that even in the deepest shadows of betrayal, truth and love will always find the light.
