Chapter 8 - THE SIEGE OF THE LAKE HOUSE

The Moretti lake house sat secluded deep within the pine forests bordering Lake Michigan. It was a rustic, multi-million-dollar modern estate built of cedar, stone, and bulletproof glass, surrounded by fifty acres of private, densely wooded land.

Luca had deployed his main strike force to Gary, Indiana, to ambush Falcone’s rail convoy.

He had intentionally leaked the coordinates of the lake house through a compromised Bellini informant. Luca knew Antonio’s psychology: the old underboss was obsessed with pride. Antonio wouldn't let his mercenaries claim the glory; he would want to personally execute Luca Moretti and take Isabella to legitimize his claim over the Chicago throne.

It was 2:00 AM.

A thick fog rolled off the black waters of Lake Michigan, creeping between the pine trees like ghostly fingers.

Inside the darkened living room, Isabella sat wrapped in a heavy wool blanket beside the stone fireplace, drinking warm cocoa. She was remarkably calm, holding the silver key against her chest.

“Daddy is going to win, isn't he, Emily?” she asked softly.

“Your daddy always wins, sweet girl,” I said, checking the tactical radio strapped to my belt.

Luca walked into the room, wearing full tactical gear, a customized combat rifle slung across his chest. He looked like an angel of death carved from obsidian.

“Dante reports the Gary operation was a total success,” Luca said, his voice quiet. “Falcone’s three hundred mercenaries were surrounded inside the rail yard. Over half surrendered without firing a shot; the rest were neutralized. Falcone’s power in New York is broken permanently.”

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for weeks. “And Antonio?”

“Our drones spotted four black SUVs entering the private road five minutes ago,” Luca replied, checking the magazine of his sidearm. “Antonio took the bait. He came with his personal death squad, thinking I was here alone with ten guards.”

He walked over to Isabella, kissing her forehead gently. “Bella, go with Emily down to the boathouse safe room. Marco is waiting there with the speed boat. If anything goes wrong, you leave across the lake to Michigan.”

“No,” Isabella said firmly, looking straight into her father’s eyes.

Luca blinked in surprise. “Bella—”

“I ran away when Mommy died,” the little girl said, her chin lifting with unmistakable Moretti stubbornness. “I’m not running anymore. Emily taught me that family stands together.”

A lump formed in my throat. Luca looked up at me, his eyes shining with profound emotion, a mixture of overwhelming pride and fierce, desperate love.

“She gets that from you,” Luca murmured, stepping toward me. He cupped my face with his gloved hands, pulling me in for a deep, searing kiss that tasted of impending gunpowder and eternal devotion. “Stay behind the reinforced glass in the inner vault. If anyone breaches the door, shoot them. Don't hesitate.”

“Come back to us alive, Luca,” I whispered, gripping his tactical vest. “Don't make me raise your stubborn daughter alone.”

A rare, breathtaking smile broke across Luca’s handsome face. “I’m coming back to marry you, Emily Carter. Nothing in hell will stop me.”

Before I could process his words, the exterior floodlights of the lake house snapped on.

Sirens wailed across the estate.

Gunfire ripped through the night air.

Antonio’s men had breached the outer treeline. Heavy rounds pulverized the front porch, shattering the outer wooden beams.

“Vault! Now!” Luca roared, raising his rifle.

I scooped up Isabella and sprinted toward the reinforced steel door behind the stone fireplace. I slammed the vault shut, turning the electronic deadbolts, locking us within a safe room surrounded by four feet of reinforced titanium-lined concrete.

Through the security monitors mounted on the wall, Isabella and I watched the battle unfold.

Luca didn't fight like a man defending a house; he fought like a demon defending his altar. He moved through the shadows of the estate with lethal grace. Every shot he fired found its mark. Supported by Roberto and Dante from elevated sniper positions in the watchtower, Antonio’s vanguard was slaughtered within minutes on the front lawn.

Then, the monitor switched to the rear patio.

Antonio Bellini, his face twisted in madness, flanked by three elite hitmen, had bypassed the main fighting line using the boat dock.

They were blowing the hinges off the rear service door.

Luca was pinned down in the front courtyard, engaged with two remaining snipers in the trees. He couldn't reach the rear of the house in time.

Antonio was inside the living room.

On the camera feed, we saw Antonio kick open the shattered doors, an automatic submachine gun in his hands. “Moretti! Come out, you coward! I know you're in the walls!”

Isabella grabbed my arm. “Emily... Daddy can't get inside!”

I looked at the monitor. I saw Luca sprinting toward the back patio, but Antonio was already planting a thermite breaching charge directly against our vault door.

If that charge blew, the fire would incinerate the vault’s oxygen within thirty seconds.

I looked at the weapons rack inside the safe room. A compact 9mm Glock sat in a foam case.

My hands shook, but I remembered the bruised face of the little girl beside me. I remembered Elena’s voice whispering through the recorder: *“Protect Bella.”*

I loaded the magazine. I racked the slide.

“Bella, stay behind the steel partition,” I said with cold, crystalline clarity.

“Emily, no!”

I overrode the electronic deadbolt.

The heavy vault door slid open three inches.

Antonio Bellini had his back turned, adjusting the timer on the thermite charge.

“Antonio,” I called out.

The old mobster spun around in shock, raising his submachine gun.

I didn't wait for him to aim. I remembered what Luca had told me in his office: *Fear doesn't keep you sharp. Resolve does.*

I pulled the trigger three times.
