Chapter 3 - Dawn on the Lower East Side

The morning sun struggled to pierce through the thick, industrial smog hanging over the Lower East Side. At 6:00 AM, the neighborhood was already noisy with the clatter of delivery trucks, the shouts of street vendors, and the grinding gears of the city waking up.
Inside Apartment 4B of a battered brick tenement building, Elena Reyes was frantically trying to get ready for another grueling twelve-hour shift.
She wore a faded blue blouse and a worn skirt, her dark hair tied back neatly. Her eyes were rimmed with dark circles from a sleepless night spent worrying. Last night, Mia had returned from the gala with wide, shining eyes, claiming that a very tall, scary-looking man in a fancy suit had promised to be her daddy for a school show. Elena’s heart had nearly stopped when she heard the story. She knew who Damiano Verrone was; everyone in the city knew the mafia king. The thought that her daughter had approached the most dangerous man in America sent waves of pure terror through her bones.
“Mia, sweetheart, eat your oatmeal quickly,” Elena urged gently, setting a small ceramic bowl on the wobbly kitchen table. “We need to leave in ten minutes if we want to catch the subway before the morning rush.”
Mia sat at the table, wearing her only clean dress—a light yellow frock with a small stain near the hem. She was clutching the red paper heart in her lap like it was made of gold.
“Mommy, do you think he’ll come?” Mia asked, her brown eyes shining with innocent faith. “He pinky-swore... well, he said ‘tomorrow, I am your father.’”
Elena knelt down beside her daughter, taking Mia’s small hands in hers, fighting back the burning tears threatening to spill over.
“Oh, my sweet girl,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking. “Men like that... men who run the city... they don't make promises to little girls like us. You must never, ever go near him again, understand? He’s very powerful, and very dangerous.”
Before Mia could reply, a loud, thunderous knock shook the apartment door.
It wasn't a normal knock. It was the heavy, rhythmic pounding of men who expected doors to be opened instantly.
Elena froze. Her breath caught in her throat. She stood up slowly, stepping in front of Mia to shield her from the entryway.
“Stay behind me,” Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She walked slowly across the linoleum floor and reached for the rusted doorknob. She twisted it and pulled the door open an inch, holding the chain lock securely in place.
Through the narrow gap, she didn't see Marchetti’s thugs or local cops.
She saw three men in immaculate, bespoke black suits, wearing dark sunglasses, standing tall in the cramped, grimy hallway. At the center of them stood Rafael Conti, his expression completely unreadable.
“Elena Reyes?” Rafael asked, his voice smooth and professional.
“Yes?” Elena trembled, her fingers whitening around the door edge. “Who are you? What do you want?”
Rafael didn't answer with words. He simply raised his hand and gestured down the hallway.
The two guards flanking him stepped aside.
Stepping out from the shadows of the stairwell was Damiano Verrone.

The mafia king looked entirely out of place in the grimy tenement hallway, yet his presence commanded the space so completely that the peeling wallpaper and exposed pipes seemed to vanish. He wore a crisp charcoal overcoat, his slate-gray eyes locking directly onto Elena through the crack in the door.
“Open the door, Elena,” Damiano commanded, his voice deep, resonant, and impossible to disobey. “We have a contract to fulfill.”
