Chapter 8 - The Father’s Day Showcase

Spring rolled into early summer, transforming the manicured lawns and blooming rose gardens of the Verrone estate into a lush, vibrant paradise.
St. Jude’s Elementary School was hosting its annual Father’s Day family picnic on the school’s sprawling athletic fields.
In past years, Elena had dreaded this event, knowing Mia would sit quietly in the corner while other children played catch with their fathers.
This year, the atmosphere was entirely different.
A sleek, black bulletproof Maybach pulled up along the curb outside the school gates. The rear door opened, and Damiano Verrone stepped out, wearing a simple navy polo shirt and sunglasses, looking like an ordinary father attending a school function—if you ignored the two armed syndicate bodyguards casually sipping coffee by the fence line.
Mia came running across the grassy field, her dark hair flying behind her, screaming at the top of her lungs, “Daddy! You came!”
Damiano dropped to one knee just in time to catch her flying leap, lifting her up into the air and spinning her around as she giggled uncontrollably.
Elena walked up behind them, carrying a picnic basket, a soft, radiant smile gracing her face. She wore a light summer sundress, looking healthy, vibrant, and completely at peace.
“I told you he wouldn't miss it, Mia,” Elena smiled, setting the basket down on the picnic blanket.
“Nobody breaks a contract with my daughter,” Damiano declared solemnly, setting Mia back down on her feet, taking her small hand in his large one, and wrapping his other arm securely around Elena’s waist.

Parents and teachers nearby watched the scene with a mixture of awe and respectful terror, giving them a wide berth, while Mia proudly introduced her father to every single kid in her class.
For Damiano, standing on a noisy elementary school field surrounded by screaming children and bouncing soccer balls, this was the greatest victory of his life. He had conquered cities, defeated empires, and crushed armies, but nothing compared to the simple, profound glory of being called Daddy.
