Chapter 10 - The Open Horizon

The reception was held under a massive glass pavilion illuminated by thousands of fairy lights that stretched across the Greenwich estate gardens.

There were no stuffy speeches about pedigree, no condescending remarks from distant relatives, and no fake smiles. Uncle Arthur had conveniently taken an 'extended business trip' to Zurich, and Chloe—chastised and remarkably humble—spent the evening actually pouring drinks for the catering staff to make amends.

Daniel and I stood near the edge of the stone terrace, looking out over the sprawling lawns that now symbolized not ancestral burden, but a brand-new foundation.

"So," Daniel said, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close against his side as we watched the distant lights of the Long Island Sound shimmer in the night. "My mother tells me the restructuring terms for the estate include a clause requiring me to take over executive operations of Mercer Real Estate."

I took a sip of champagne, smiling innocently. "Does it? My legal team must have slipped that in."

"And she tells me you've appointed me CEO of Hartwell's eastern freight division."

"Well," I turned to look up at him, my eyes sparkling in the candlelight, "someone has to make sure the boxes move themselves, Daniel. And you were always the best man for the job."

He laughed, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. "You are ruthless, Evelyn Hart. You bought a multi-million-dollar estate just to teach my mother some manners."

"I bought financial security," I corrected playfully. "The manners were a free bonus."

"And what happens now?" he asked, his voice softening as he looked down at me with absolute adoration. "Do we stay in Greenwich? Do we move to Manhattan? Do we run shipping empires from a yacht in the Caribbean?"

I looked out across the open horizon, where the dark silhouette of the estate merged with the endless, starlit sky. The past three days—the gray uniform, the lemon bleach, the whispered insults in the library—felt like a lifetime ago. But they had given me the one thing money could never buy: absolute certainty about the man standing beside me.

"We stay right here," I said, leaning my head against his shoulder. "We build. We work. And we keep our doors open to anyone willing to put in an honest day's work."

Daniel smiled, tightening his arm around me. "Sounds like a plan, Mrs. Mercer."

"I love the sound of that," I whispered, and as the music swelled around us under the glowing Connecticut stars, we stepped forward into a future entirely of our own making.
