Chapter 6 - The Mortgage Default

The silence in the pavilion was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the Persian rug.
Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide with shock and confusion. "Ev? What is going on?"
I turned to him, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze before stepping out from behind the table. I reached into the small evening bag hanging from my wrist, pulled out a thick legal document bearing the official seal of Hartwell Holdings, and placed it gently on the white tablecloth right in front of Margaret.
"What is this?" Margaret whispered, her voice trembling slightly for the first time. The aristocratic facade was cracking, revealing the desperate, aging woman underneath.
"That," I said calmly, "is the default notice for the commercial loan on this estate, along with all remaining debt obligations of Mercer Real Estate Holdings."
Uncle Arthur slammed his champagne flute down, red-faced and furious. "Who do you think you are, bringing legal papers to a family dinner? Security! Throw this gold-digging lunatic out of the club right now!"
"Nobody is throwing anyone out," a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the entrance of the pavilion.
Marcus, my head of security, stepped through the double doors, flanked by two local police officers and a senior partner from a prominent Manhattan banking firm, Mr. Sterling.
Mr. Sterling walked straight up to the head table, ignoring Uncle Arthur completely, and nodded respectfully toward me.
"Good evening, Ms. Hart," Sterling said clearly.
The room erupted into murmurs.
*Hart? Did he just call her Ms. Hart?*
*Hartwell? As in Hartwell Logistics?*
*The billionaire freight transport company?*
Margaret’s face drained of all color. She stared at Mr. Sterling, then slowly turned her gaze back to me, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror as the pieces finally clicked into place.
"You..." Margaret whispered, her lips parting in disbelief. "You're... Hartwell."
"Evelyn Hart," I confirmed, resting my hands on the edge of the table and leaning slightly forward. "Owner and CEO of Hartwell Logistics. And, as of four o'clock this afternoon, the sole lienholder on every square inch of property your family owns, including this country club's primary debt."
Chloe dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the floor, red liquid pooling like blood across the white tiles.
"Daniel," Margaret gasped, turning frantically to her son. "Daniel, tell me this is a joke. Tell me your fiancée isn't... she can't own us!"
Daniel was staring at me, his mouth slightly open, looking as though he had been struck by lightning.
May you like
"Ev..." he breathed, his voice barely a whisper. "You own the mortgage?"
