Chapter 5 - The Council at Dawn

By 7:30 AM, the autumn rain had cleared, leaving behind a sharp, crystalline sunrise that bathed the glass-and-steel boardroom of Hail Industries in Manhattan in brilliant, blinding gold.
The forty-second floor was locked down.
Ten members of the executive board of directors sat around the fifty-foot obsidian conference table.
Carter Vance sat at the head of the table, looking crisp, radiant, and supreme in a tailored bespoke three-piece suit, his gold cufflinks catching the morning sun. Spread before him were eleven copies of the Voluntary Executive Resignation and Transition Charter.
"Gentlemen," Carter began, his voice carrying the smooth, sorrowful gravity of a man performing a necessary civic duty. "We all love Daniel. He built this enterprise with his own blood. But a six-hundred-million-dollar security collapse cannot be ignored by Wall Street. For the survival of forty thousand employees, we must accept his transitional resignation this morning."
The heavy double mahogany entrance doors of the boardroom swung open with concussive force.
The security guards outside did not move.
Daniel Hail strode into the boardroom.
He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, his posture radiating the absolute, terrifying stillness of an emperor entering a province that had forgotten his name.
Walking on his right arm was I.
I wore an elegant, tailored navy wool power suit Mrs. Bellweather had helped me select from the master guest wardrobe, my hair pulled back into a severe, professional chignon, carrying three thick, red-embossed audit portfolios beneath my arm.
Behind us walked Frank Callahan, accompanied by Special Agent Raymond Callahan of the FBI’s Corporate Fraud and Counterintelligence Division, flanked by two armed federal marshals.
Every board member jumped to their feet in stunned, breathless silence.
Carter Vance’s smile vanished. His skin turned the shade of wet ash.

"Daniel...?" Carter stammered, his fingers tightening around his Montblanc pen until the plastic groaned. "What... what is this theater? You were supposed to review the transition documents at the estate—"
"I reviewed the documents, Carter," Daniel said softly, his voice resonating off the glass walls like an iron bell. "And I reviewed the invoice you dropped in my foyer last night."
