Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Estate

Within forty-eight hours of Carter Vance’s federal indictment, the Hail enterprise was restructured with surgical precision.

Daniel systematically purged every executive, consultant, and contractor associated with Vance’s network.

The stock price of Hail Industries rebounded by forty-two percent in forty-eight hours as Daniel announced the deployment of a new, military-grade quantum encryption architecture developed in-house, securing Project Goliath permanently against intrusion.

The Westchester estate underwent an immediate, profound transformation.

The cold, sixty-five-degree temperature mandate was abolished forever.

Daniel ordered the heating systems recalibrated to seventy-two degrees; the heavy blackout drapes and minimalist modern steel furniture were removed, replaced by warm white oak furnishings, soaring open bookshelves, and comfortable linen-covered sofas that invited real living.

The private guest suite in the west wing was permanently assigned to Lily and me.

I was officially appointed as the Executive Director of Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance for Hail Industries, with an annual executive salary of two hundred and forty thousand dollars and full voting oversight over all external vendor contracts.

Lily was thriving.

She was enrolled in the elite Westchester Country Day Academy, excelling at the top of her class, her bright laughter and energetic footsteps echoing through halls that had known only rigid corporate silence for a decade.

On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in late spring, Daniel and I stood on the wide stone terrace overlooking the gardens, sipping fresh roast coffee.

Down on the emerald green lawn near the garden pond, four-year-old Lily was running with energetic, fearless speed, tossing a small red ball for Barnaby, a playful golden retriever puppy Daniel had adopted for her fourth birthday.

Lily was laughing—a clear, musical, unburdened sound that carried across the water, her pink sneakers glowing in the sunlight, completely free of fear, completely free of shadows.

Daniel walked over, resting his arm gently around my waist, pulling me close against his side.

"How does it feel, Executive Director Clara?" Daniel asked softly, a warm, tender smile touching his lips.

I looked out over the sparkling blue waters of the Hudson River where our commercial vessels sailed peacefully toward the open horizon under a cloudless sapphire sky.

"It feels like daylight, Daniel," I answered with a heart full of absolute, unbreakable peace. "Pure, sovereign daylight."
