Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Dark

"Stay behind me!" Dominic ordered, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls as he raised his weapon into the pitch-black void.

A red laser sight cut through the darkness, painting a crimson dot against the granite wall inches from Dominic’s shoulder. From the shadows of the subterranean tunnel beyond the gate, a slow, mocking applause began to echo—a chilling sound that made my blood run cold.

"Bravo, Dominic," a smooth, cultured voice rang out throughominic’s the intercom speakers mounted along the stone ceiling. "You dug up the old man just like a good little boy. Did you really think he’d take the master key to the grave without leaving a spare for his real favorite?"

Dominic’s entire body went rigid. His breath hitched in a sharp, jagged gasp that I could hear clearly in the dark. "Julian," Dominic hissed, the name dripping with pure, unadulterated venom. "You arrogant bastard. You were supposed to be rotting in a federal penitentiary."

"Prisons are for men with small ambitions, little brother," the voice—Julian—replied smoothly. "And as you can see, I had unfinished business. Especially now that you’ve managed to father an heir and bring a sweet little maid into the crossfire."

My heart slammed against my ribs. Julian Vale. The exiled uncle, the black sheep of the family who had supposedly tried to assassinate Victor Vale a decade ago before vanishing into the criminal underworld. If Julian was alive and inside the estate, Noah was in mortal danger.

"If you touch my son, I will tear this mansion down brick by brick and feed you to the river rats," Dominic roared, firing two rapid shots toward the iron gate. The muzzle flashes illuminated the dark chamber in blinding white bursts, the bullets ricocheting off the steel bars with a shower of orange sparks.

"Save your ammunition, Dom," Julian laughed coolly. "You're locked inside the family vault with three feet of reinforced concrete and zero cellular reception. And upstairs... well, let's just say your little maid left the nursery door unlocked."

Panic seized my chest with icy claws. "Noah!" I screamed, slamming my fists against the iron gate. "Dominic, we have to get out of here! Noah is alone upstairs!"

Dominic didn't hesitate. He holstered his pistol and threw his massive frame against the iron gate, kicking and slamming his shoulder into the bars with desperate, berserker strength. But the gate was reinforced with hydraulic deadbolts controlled from the mansion’s master security terminal—a terminal that was currently out of reach.

"The ventilation shaft!" Dominic yelled, pointing his flashlight upward toward a narrow square grate near the vaulted ceiling of the crypt. "Clara, listen to me. It's too small for me, but you can fit. You have to climb up there, find the breaker box, and override the gate."

"I'm not leaving you here!" I yelled back over the sound of my own rising panic.

"If you don't go, my son dies!" Dominic grabbed my shoulders, his slate-gray eyes burning with fierce, desperate intensity. "Clara, please. Protect my boy. Find the key in my hand, take it, and run to the north wing!"

May you like

He pressed the polished brass key into my palm, his warm fingers closing over mine for a brief, shattering second.

Without another word, Dominic boosted me up onto a stone pedestal, giving me the leverage to reach the rusted iron vent. I ripped the metal grate away with a sharp wrench, ignoring the sharp edges cutting into my skin, and wriggled headfirst into the dark, suffocating metal tunnel.
