Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

The sound of shattering glass echoed from the main corridor just as Julian’s fingers began to pry my fist open.
"Julian! Let her go, you sick son of a bitch!"
Dominic’s voice roared through the north wing like an oncoming freight train. He burst through the double doors, his face covered in soot, his clothes torn from the climb through the ventilation shaft. His slate-gray eyes locked onto Julian holding me against the desk, and in that fraction of a second, all the cold, calculating detachment of the Chicago crime lord vanished entirely.
Dominic charged across the room with the blind, feral fury of a wounded wolf.
Julian shoved me aside, sending me crashing against a bookshelf as he spun around to face his older brother. The two men collided with a sickening thud, crashing through a low wooden coffee table and sending ceramic lamps and whiskey bottles shattering across the floor.
"You should have stayed dead, Julian!" Dominic snarled, driving his fist hard into Julian’s jaw.
The sound of bone meeting bone echoed sharply through the room. Julian spat a mouthful of blood onto the Persian rug, letting out a dark, twisted laugh as he wiped his lip with the back of his hand.
"You always did punch like an accountant, Dom," Julian mocked, lunging forward with a heavy brass candlestick snatched from the floor.
He swung the weapon hard, catching Dominic across the temple. Dominic staggered backward, a crimson line of blood breaking open above his eyebrow, staining his pale skin. But the injury only fueled the mafia kingpin’s rage. Dominic tackled Julian around the waist, driving him hard into the wall of double-sided mirrors.
CRASH!
The glass shattered into a million jagged shards, revealing a hidden, narrow catwalk behind the mirror wall that led directly into the estate's dark, winding underground escape tunnels.
"This ends tonight, Julian!" Dominic roared, pinning his brother against the exposed wooden studs of the wall, his hands locking around Julian’s throat with crushing, suffocating force.
Julian’s face turned a violent shade of purple, his hands clawing desperately at Dominic’s wrists. "D-Dom... stop... look behind you..." Julian choked out, his eyes wide with sudden, genuine terror.
Dominic paused, his breathing heavy and ragged, and slowly turned his head.
Standing in the shattered frame of the mirror wall, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker with both hands and trembling from head to toe, was four-year-old Noah.
The boy’s wild, bloodshot eyes weren't looking at Dominic. They were locked entirely on Julian, who was gasping for air against the studs.
"Leave my daddy alone," Noah whispered, his small voice carrying an eerie, unbreakable steel that froze the blood in my veins.
Before Dominic could react, Noah raised the heavy iron poker high above his head and swung it with all his four-year-old might, striking Julian squarely across the chest. The impact knocked the wind out of the exiled uncle, sending him stumbling backward off the edge of the hidden catwalk down into the dark, echoing drop of the escape tunnel below.

Thud. Silence.
A heavy, suffocating quiet settled over the north wing, broken only by the sound of our ragged breathing and the steady patter of rain against the limestone glass outside.
