Chapter 6 - The Unsealing of the Covenants

Arthur Ross stepped forward, dropping a thick, red-tabbed federal dossier directly onto the linen tablecloth right between Director Henderson’s plate and Richard’s shattered glass.
"Richard Rowe, Julian Vance," Arthur announced, his deep voice carrying the cold finality of an executioner reading a docket. "You are formally served with federal grand jury indictments returned ninety minutes ago by Chief Judge Katherine Thornton under Cause Number 26-CR-9941."
Julian Vance scrambled backward against the glass wall, his hands trembling violently. "On what charges? This is an internal corporate governance dispute between equity partners!"
"Forty-eight counts of federal enterprise racketeering under the RICO Act, grand corporate fraud, interstate wire fraud, commercial extortion, and the unlawful hacking of sovereign corporate communications," Special Agent Sarah Lin stated with freezing clinical detachment.
Sarah Lin tapped her tablet, projecting high-resolution financial charts onto the thirty-foot digital projection wall:
CAUSE NO. 26-CR-9941 // EXHIBIT A: THE ROWE-VANCE ENTERPRISE
PRIMARY ASSET RECOVERY: $12,400,000.00 FROM BANQUE CANTONALE DE GENÈVE
FORENSIC DISCOVERY: NOTARIZED ESCROW AGREEMENT DATED DECEMBER 4, 2023
SIGNATORIES: RICHARD ROWE & JULIAN VANCE
INTENDED OUTCOME: FORCED RECEIVERSHIP OF BENNETT ROWE CONSULTING.
"First Midwestern Bank surrendered your private Cayman routing logs at sunrise, Mr. Rowe," Sarah Lin continued. "We have the decrypted communications proving you manufactured the Gary logistics debt, the wire transfers confirming your kickback agreement with Apex Capital, and the recorded audio files where you ordered Malcolm Hale to track Miss Bennett to Evanston."
Richard Rowe backed against the wainscoting, his handsome, tanned face turning the sallow, grayish hue of wet lime.
He looked around at the eighteen directors who had once toasted his genius—men who had played golf with him in Palm Beach, bankers who had underwritten his private jets—and saw every single one of them lowering their eyes, pushing their briefing binders away as if he were carrying the plague.
Director Henderson slowly stood from his chair, his eyes blazing with ancient, unforgiving fury.
"You stole twelve million dollars from this firm, Richard?" Henderson bellowed, his fist slamming onto the mahogany with enough force to jump the silver pens. "You manufactured a debt crisis to hand forty percent of our shares to a predatory New York hedge fund?"
Richard looked frantically toward the photograph lying on the wenge table—the image of Claire and me in the snowy storage bay.
"What about the ethics violation?" Richard shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at me. "Look at the picture! She was sleeping with her assistant! Under Section 12, her shares are void!"
Claire took one slow, deliberate step forward.
She did not raise her voice. She did not yell.
She stood beside me beneath the brilliant morning sun, her dark eyes locking onto her ex-husband with the calm, unyielding clarity of an empire that had cast out the rot.
"Ryan Mercer is not my assistant, Richard," Claire said, her voice ringing clearly across the breathless boardroom. "Effective at midnight on Sunday, Ryan Mercer was confirmed as Chief Restructuring Officer and Senior Operating Partner of Bennett Rowe, with five percent of the founder's preferred voting equity transferred unconditionally under his name."
She pulled an unsealed corporate resolution from Arthur’s leather portfolio, slapping it flat onto the wenge table.
"Section 12 applies to direct subordinates, Richard," Claire whispered, each word dropping like an iron deadbolt into stone. "It does not apply to corporate partners. And in this house, nobody threatens Ryan Mercer and walks away with a single share."
Two federal marshals in tactical blazers stepped forward, unholstering heavy stainless-steel handcuffs.
"Stand up, Mr. Rowe. Stand up, Mr. Vance. Place your hands behind your back."

CLICK. CLICK.
As the steel ratchets locked around Richard’s wrists over his bespoke cuffs, his screams of ruined, pathetic vanity echoed down the executive corridor of the thirty-second floor, through the private elevators, and out onto LaSalle Street as the conspirators were hauled away into the dark where they belonged.
