Chapter 4 - The Interrogation in the VIP Lounge

At 3:30 in the afternoon, the private Meridian Admirals Sanctuary on the mezzanine level of Terminal Two was cleared of all passengers and staff.

The forty-foot floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooked the rain-slicked tarmac of Runway 16 Left, where three Boeing 777s sat beneath the gray Puget Sound drizzle, their high-bypass turbofans idling with a low, continuous rumble that vibrated through the reinforced glass.

Inside the lounge, the air smelled of dark roast espresso, polished walnut, and the sterile chill of sixty-four-degree climate control.

Sitting at the center of a sixty-foot leather banquette was Emma Collins.

She had taken off her oversized Northwestern hoodie, revealing a clean white cotton T-shirt, sipping hot Earl Grey tea from a porcelain cup that Port Director Marcus Thorne had personally carried up from the executive galley. Her canvas tote sat on the table beside her, resting against a fresh leather portfolio Arthur Ross had opened.

Sitting across from her, his three-piece charcoal suit pristine, was Grant Mercer.

Standing near the private bar, flanked by two armed federal marshals and Chief Investigator Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Crimes Division, were Denise Carver and Airport General Manager Thomas Vance.

Denise’s navy blazer was wrinkled; her gold service pin had been removed; her hands were clasped in front of her stomach, shaking continuously.

Thomas Vance stood with his collar unbuttoned, his tie pulled loose, holding an unsealed, red-tabbed internal auditing binder that David Sterling had placed into his hands ten minutes earlier.

"Let’s review the execution of the scheme, David," Grant commanded, not looking up from his daughter’s face.

David Sterling—the firm’s chief forensic accountant—tapped a wireless trackpad, casting an eighty-inch corporate transaction web onto the digital presentation wall:

THE SEATTLE-TACOMA INVENTORY CONVERSION RING (2024–2026)

PRIMARY OPERATORS: DENISE CARVER & THOMAS VANCE

COMMERCIAL BENEFICIARY: STERLING LOGISTICS EQUITIES LLC

THE MECHANISM: SYSTEMATIC FORCED BUMPING OF UNACCOMPANIED MINORS & STANDBY TRAVELERS TO VACATE PREMIER SUITES FOR REGIONAL CRONY CLIENTS

PRIMARY KICKBACK LEDGER: $640,000.00 DIVERTED INTO 'CARVER PACIFIC HOLDINGS' (RENO, NEVADA).

"Here is the mechanics of the operation, Mr. Mercer," David Sterling reported, his clinical voice cutting through the quiet room like a scalpel. "Ms. Carver utilized an obsolete administrative override code—EXEC-OMEGA-7—which was originally designed for emergency organ transport coordinators in 2018. When an unaccompanied young traveler or an employee dependent booked an executive suite during peak corridors, Ms. Carver would flag the reservation as an 'unverified security breach' twenty minutes prior to boarding."

David clicked the trackpad, displaying ninety-four internal gate logs:

"The passenger was intimidated, threatened with police intervention, and escorted to the economy overflow area. The vacated suite was then transferred to Sterling Logistics executives, who billed their corporate clients twelve thousand dollars per seat while remitting zero revenue to Meridian Coast."

Emma set her teacup down with a soft, clean click.

Her hazel eyes—clear, intelligent, and carrying that same unyielding moral gravity that Rachel Collins had possessed—looked directly at Denise Carver.

"You've done this ninety-four times, Ms. Carver?" Emma asked.

Her voice was quiet, but it carried an ancient, unshakeable authority that made Denise flinch as if struck by a physical blow.

"I... I was following regional directives, Miss Collins..." Denise whimpered, tears of ruined vanity tearing through her mascara. "The airport authority told us to prioritize commercial corporate partnerships—"

"The airport authority never authorized the criminal extortion of paying passengers, Ms. Carver," General Manager Thomas Vance interrupted frantically, desperately trying to detach himself from the falling wreckage. "Mr. Mercer, I swear to God on my mother's grave, I had no knowledge of this ticket arbitrage! Denise was operating an independent cell within the gate operations pool—"

Arthur Ross stepped forward, dropping a thick, blue-tabbed forensic dossier directly onto the glass table between Vance’s hands.

"Thomas," Arthur Ross said, his dry baritone dropping into an octave of lethal, terrifying iron. "Do not commit perjury in the presence of the United States Marshals Service."

Arthur turned page twelve of the dossier:

FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF SEATTLE // ESCROW ACCOUNT #9914-B

BENEFICIARY: THOMAS VANCE (PERSONAL HOLDING TRUST)

DEPOSIT RECORD: $15,000.00 MONTHLY ACH TRANSFERS FROM 'CARVER PACIFIC HOLDINGS'

MEMORANDUM ENTRY: 'REGIONAL GATE COMPLIANCE ADVISORY SERVICES.'

The lounge went dead silent.

Thomas Vance’s breath caught in his throat with a sharp, wheezing rattle. He staggered backward against the bar, his hands trembling violently, his eyes bulging as he looked at the four armed marshals standing by the threshold.

"Fifteen thousand a month, Thomas?" Grant Mercer said softly.

He stood up from the leather banquette.

He didn't shout. He didn't slam his fist onto the table.

The terrifying stillness of the man—six foot two, broad-shouldered, carrying himself with the absolute, uncontested majesty of an emperor who had built an airline with his own sweat—filled the room with a pressure denser than deep-ocean water.

"My wife Rachel worked thirty years as an oncology nurse in public wards," Grant whispered, each word dropping like an iron deadbolt into place. "She taught Emma that an honest name is the only thing a human being owns that cannot be repossessed by a bank. She refused to use my last name because she didn't want people bowing to her in restaurants."

Grant walked across the room, stopping two paces in front of Thomas Vance and Denise Carver.

"And you two used my airline's uniform to terrorize an eighteen-year-old girl because her sneakers were old and her sweatshirt didn't have a corporate logo."

Grant turned his head toward Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin.

"Agent Lin."

May you like

"Yes, Mr. Mercer?"

"Execute the federal warrants."
