Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Purge

At eight-thirty on Monday morning, the thirty-second floor of the Sterling Maritime Financial Center was placed under executive lockdown.
The thirty-seat boardroom, enclosed in heavy paneled mahogany with panoramic views of Lake Michigan, was packed with the fourteen members of the board of directors, six corporate litigators, and the senior compliance officers from the Federal Maritime Commission.
Arthur strode in at 8:45, wearing a fresh navy suit, trying desperately to project the unshakeable confidence of a sitting CEO. Beside him walked his uncle, Robert Sterling, the vice-chairman who controlled twelve percent of the legacy family shares.
"Gentlemen," Arthur announced, slamming his leather portfolio onto the head of the table. "I am aware of the theatrical disruption staged by my estranged wife on Friday evening. A frivolous, fraudulent attempt by an unstable spouse to manipulate our corporate governance. Our legal team has already filed a multi-million-dollar defamation suit in federal court. We will proceed with the European logistics merger as scheduled."
"The European merger is canceled, Arthur," a cool, resonant voice spoke from the shadows of the executive anteroom.
Elena walked into the boardroom.
She wore a bespoke charcoal wool power suit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, her presence commanding the immediate, absolute silence of every director at the table. Behind her walked Marcus Hayes and two forensic accountants carrying three thick volumes of certified financial audits.
Robert Sterling stood up, scowling across the table. "Elena! This is an executive session of the board of directors! You have no standing to enter this room!"
Marcus Hayes stepped forward, slamming three thick certified probate decrees onto the center of the table.
"Mrs. Elena Lin-Sterling is the seventy-four percent majority voting shareholder of this corporation," Marcus announced, his voice cutting through the room like a broadsword. "Under the emergency resolutions ratified by the Delaware Chancery Court at dawn, the legacy board has been formally dissolved."
Elena took her seat at the head of the table—the seat Arthur’s father had occupied for thirty years.
She opened her laptop, connecting it to the seventy-foot digital display wall.
The massive screens illuminated instantly, displaying a complex financial flow chart linking Sterling Maritime's offshore accounts in Panama to five shell corporations registered under Arthur Sterling and Julianna Vance's names.
"Over the past thirty-six months," Elena presented, her voice measured, precise, and lethal, "Arthur Sterling diverted sixty-two million dollars from our domestic fleet maintenance reserves to fund speculative real estate developments in Dubai and pay off private gambling debts in Macau."
The boardroom descended into furious, panicked murmurs as the directors leaned forward to examine the audited bank routing numbers on the screen.
Robert Sterling’s face turned an ashen shade of chalk. He looked at Arthur, his hands trembling. "Arthur... is this true? Did you touch the fleet reserves?"
Arthur opened his mouth, trying to find words, but his throat seized, producing only a faint, choked squeak.
Elena turned her cool, steady gaze back to the directors.
"As majority owner," Elena declared, "I hereby accept the immediate resignations of Arthur Sterling and Robert Sterling. The remaining board members have two hours to sign their compliance disclosures, or their files will be transferred directly to the Department of Justice."

She turned her eyes upon Arthur, who sat paralyzed at the opposite end of the table.
"Your keycard has been deactivated, Arthur. Security will escort you to the street."
