That evening, the city lights twinkled across the dark waters of Lake Michigan as a quiet celebration took place inside the Bennett family home—a cozy, sunlit suburban house on the outskirts of Evanston that Thomas had spent the last two months secretly buying back and renovating for his family.
The dining table was laden with roasted turkey, fresh vegetables, and a homemade apple pie baked by Sarah, the head nurse who had stood by Daniel through the darkest nights of the crisis.
Thomas sat at the head of the table, carving the turkey with steady hands, while Maya sat to his right, excitedly chattering about her first week back at regular school.
Daniel sat near the window, watching his family through the warm glow of the chandelier.

Thomas set down the carving knife, wiping his hands on a napkin, and raised a glass of sparkling cider toward Daniel.
