Chapter 8 - The Downfall of Vance-Sterling

Within two hours, the tenth floor of St. Jude Memorial Hospital was crawling with federal investigators, forensic accountants, and state police inspectors.
The raid on Vance-Sterling Pharmaceuticals headquarters downtown was executed simultaneously by federal marshals and SEC enforcement agents. Servers were seized, executive offices were cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape, and Richard Vance—Marcus’s father and the CEO of the conglomerate—was dragged out of his corner office in handcuffs live on morning television.
Back in the VIP suite, little Maya had woken up during the commotion, sitting up in bed and eating a bowl of hospital-provided gelatin with wide, curious eyes, completely unaware of the federal war playing out around her.
Thomas Bennett sat by her bedside, holding her small hand, tears of profound relief streaming down his weathered cheeks as he whispered stories about her mother.
Daniel stood by the window, watching the unmarked federal vans load up the detained security operatives in the courtyard below. Arthur Sterling walked up beside him, handing him a fresh cup of black coffee.
“Your father is a stubborn old man, Daniel,” Arthur said quietly, offering a warm, grandfatherly smile. “He spent seventeen years living like a ghost just to keep those flash drives out of Richard Vance’s hands. But he couldn't have won this war without a surgeon to finish the cut.”
Daniel took the coffee, his hands finally steady. He looked at the manila envelope still resting on the desk—the evidence that had proven his mother’s murder, cleared his father’s name, and rescued his niece from the jaws of a corporate conspiracy.
“My mother always said truth has a way of coming to the surface, no matter how deep you bury it,” Daniel murmured, taking a sip of the coffee.
“She was right,” Arthur agreed. “And as of this morning, the federal grand jury has indicted Richard Vance on charges of corporate murder, racketeering, and international fraud. Vance-Sterling Pharmaceuticals is being dissolved, and its assets are being placed into a public restitution trust for the victims of their corporate crimes.”
Daniel turned his head, looking over at his father and little Maya laughing softly by the bed. The invisible wall of bitterness and betrayal that had partitioned his heart for seventeen years had finally crumbled away, leaving behind a family that had survived the storm.

“What happens now?” Daniel asked softly.
“Now?” Arthur smiled, clapping a reassuring hand on Daniel’s shoulder. “Now you take a much-needed vacation, help your father take care of your niece, and let the justice system do what it should have done twenty years ago.”
