Chapter 2 - The Archive of Betrayal

The sprawling collection of items lay scattered across the imported Italian marble, illuminated by the cold, unforgiving light of the crystal chandelier.

Dante stared down at the floor, his brain struggling to process the sheer audacity of what rested at his feet. Mrs. Gable had not merely carried a suitcase down the stairs; she had uncovered a meticulously planned blueprint for an absolute erasure.

First came a stack of duplicate estate keys, tagged neatly with white labels corresponding to every single locked room, vault, and archive in the Moretti mansion. Next to them tumbled a thick packet of moving-company receipts, dated for the exact week following the wedding ceremony, detailing the transit of high-end furniture to a storage facility in downtown Chicago.

Then came the photographs.

Dante reached down, his large fingers picking up a series of glossy polaroids. They were interior shots of the master suite—his late wife Elena’s private sanctuary. Every single piece of furniture had been numbered with yellow sticky notes: Armoire #1: Sell. Vanity #2: Relocate to guest wing. Bedframe: Discard. Even the framed photographs of Mia with her mother had been marked with red marker: REMOVE.

A cold, dead silence settled over the foyer. The guests in the drawing-room had long since stopped whispering; the entire estate seemed to be holding its collective breath, waiting for the storm to break.

Mrs. Gable stepped forward, her hands trembling as she held out a thick, leather-bound auction inventory she had retrieved from the bottom of the suitcase.

"Mr. Moretti," the housekeeper said, her voice shaking with righteous indignation. "I was conducting the final linen inventory in the master suite per your instructions, and I found these hidden at the bottom of Ms. Vance's overflow luggage in the walk-in closet. You need to see this."

Vivienne let out a strangled, panicked shriek, lunging forward to intercept the housekeeper. "Give that back! That's private! You have no right to search my personal effects!"

"Get back," Dante commanded, thrusting his arm out to block Vivienne, his eyes never leaving the housekeeper. "Open it, Mrs. Gable."

The elderly housekeeper flipped open the leather ledger. "Sir... according to this inventory, Mrs. Moretti's personal belongings—her art collection, her writing desk, her books—were scheduled to be sold at a private fine-arts auction in Geneva. Exactly two days after the wedding."

Dante’s eyes scanned the pages, and with every sentence he read, the blood in his veins turned to liquid nitrogen. The dates, the appraisal values, the buyer contacts—it was a fully executed liquidation plan.

And then, Mrs. Gable pointed to the final page of the auction ledger.

"There is an exception, sir," the housekeeper whispered, her voice dropping. "One item was explicitly withheld from the auction manifest. Mrs. Moretti’s platinum-and-diamond heirloom necklace. The one you placed in her dressing room safe on our tenth anniversary."

Dante slowly raised his head. His slate-gray eyes locked onto Vivienne's throat.

Resting against the bloody-red fabric of Vivienne's designer dress, catching the full glare of the crystal chandelier, was a blaze of flawless, icy light.

The diamond necklace.

Dante stared at her neck, his entire body going terrifyingly still.

Mrs. Gable stepped closer, her voice trembling. "She took it from the locked dressing room safe yesterday afternoon, Mr. Moretti. I saw her tampering with the biometric keypad."

Vivienne went completely, ghost-white pale. Her knees buckled slightly, and she grabbed the edge of the mahogany console table to steady herself. "I... I was just appraising it! For insurance! A bride has a right to ensure the family heirlooms are secure!"

"You weren't appraising it," Dante said, his voice dropping into an octave so quiet, so devoid of human warmth, that it sounded like a ghost speaking from an open grave. "You were wearing stolen history."
