Chapter 5 - The Confrontation on the Bluffs

On Thursday evening, a heavy nor'easter swept across the Massachusetts coastline, mirroring the night Jack Sterling had died eight years prior.
Richard Sterling stood on the rocky bluffs of Blackwood Point, staring down at the churning black water crashing against the jagged rocks fifty feet below. His luxury sedan sat idling near the rusted guardrail, its headlights cutting through the driving rain.
Footsteps crunched against the wet gravel behind him.
Julian walked out of the mist, his wool coat collar turned up against the freezing wind.
"The federal grand jury unsealed thirty-two capital counts against you an hour ago, Father," Julian said, his voice flat and steady. "The marshals are waiting at the estate gates."
Richard did not turn around. His hands remained deep in his coat pockets, his silver hair plastered to his forehead by the storm.
"I built an empire from three rusted tugboats, Julian," the old man murmured, his voice sounding hollow, aged, and broken. "I gave this family a seat at the table with senators, governors, and kings. And you handed it all back to a pair of women and a child."
"You built an empire on blood and cowardice, Father," Julian replied, stopping five paces away. "Jack wasn't weak because he had a conscience. He was the strongest man this family ever produced. You killed him because you were terrified he would show the world what a fraud you were."
Richard slowly turned around. His face was gaunt, his eyes bloodshot and filled with the terrifying, empty madness of a man whose kingdom had completely evaporated into dust.
"You could have had everything, Julian," Richard spat, stepping toward his son. "You could have been the master of the entire eastern seaboard."
"I would rather be a beggar with an honest name than a king with Jack's blood on my hands," Julian said softly.
Two state police cruisers pulled up the dirt road, their red and blue strobe lights illuminating the rain-swept bluffs.
Detective Raymond Vance stepped out, service weapon drawn, flanked by four tactical officers.
"Richard Sterling," Detective Vance announced over the roar of the ocean. "Step away from the cliff and place your hands behind your head."

Richard looked at the police, then at his younger son, realizing that there were no lawyers left to call, no judges left to bribe, and no lies left to hide behind.
Slowly, the old patriarch lowered himself to his knees on the wet gravel, letting the cold steel handcuffs snap around his wrists as the rain washed away the last remnants of the Sterling dynasty.
