Chapter 2 - The Velvet Box and the Federal Seal

The silence that followed the stranger's intervention was absolute. The splashing of the pool fountain seemed to stop, and every head on the patio turned toward the center of the flagstones.

Richard’s smug grin flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flash of genuine confusion and irritation. He straightened his posture, puffing out his chest as he glared at the tall, impeccably dressed man standing beside me.

"Who the hell are you?" Richard barked, stepping forward, his voice pitching up with defensive arrogance. "Some gigolo Clover hired off a website to save face? Let me tell you, pal, whatever she’s paying you, it’s not enough to cover the embarrassment of standing next to a washed-up single mom."

Tiffany giggled again, though it sounded a bit more forced this time. "Yeah, like, seriously. Is your name Chad? You look like a Chad."

The man didn't blink. He didn't flinch, nor did he raise his voice. He simply reached inside the breast pocket of his midnight-blue blazer with an unhurried, agonizingly deliberate slowness.

"My name is Julian Cross," the man said smoothly, his eyes locked onto Richard’s rapidly narrowing pupils. "And I am not an underpaid model, Mr. Sterling. Nor am I an escort."

Julian withdrew a sleek, matte-black velvet case from his pocket—the kind typically reserved for high-end credentials or federal investigative badges.

"I am a Lead Federal Forensic Auditor with the Department of Justice," Julian continued, his voice carrying effortlessly across the sunlit pool deck. "And for the past six months, my division has been conducting an exhaustive examination of Sterling Logistics and Wealth Management."

The color drained from Richard’s face so fast it looked as though someone had pulled a plug in his veins. The arrogant flush vanished, leaving him looking like a man staring down the barrel of a loaded gun.

"Federal... federal auditor?" Richard stammered, his voice cracking into a ragged, unnatural squeak. "That’s absurd! You have no jurisdiction here! This is a private club, and my corporate books are completely clean! You're just... you're just a hired gun trying to intimidate me!"

"I don't intimidate, Mr. Sterling," Julian replied coldly. "I document."

Julian popped the brass clasp of the velvet case with his thumb and flipped the lid open. Instead of a badge, he extracted a heavy, brushed-metal cryptographic drive embossed with the official Department of Justice seal and a red classification code.

Without a word of warning, Julian tossed the velvet case and the stamped federal audit drive straight onto the patio tiles.

It hit the stone with a heavy, metallic clatter that echoed off the stucco walls of the clubhouse.

Richard stared down at the drive resting on the flagstones at his feet. The smug grin completely melted off his face, replaced by a raw, gut-wrenching terror that made his knees buckle slightly. He had to reach out and grab the edge of the catering table to keep from stumbling.
