Chapter 7 - The Bakery’s New Chapter

Back in the real world—far away from the hollow pretension of country club patios and federal holding cells—life at my boutique bakery, Clover’s Sweet Confections, was booming.

Word of what had happened at Toby’s birthday party had spread through the local community like wildfire within forty-eight hours. By Monday morning, my little shop on the corner of Maple Street was surrounded by local reporters, curious neighbors, and—best of all—an endless line of loyal customers eager to show their support.

"I heard he actually tried to claim he was a respectable businessman while the feds put the cuffs on him!" Mrs. Higgins, a retired schoolteacher who lived down the street, declared loudly as she handed me a twenty-dollar bill for a box of blueberry scones. "Good riddance, I say! That man always looked down his nose at everyone. You deserve ten times better, Clover!"

"Thank you, Mrs. Higgins," I smiled, boxing up her scones with a practiced, joyful rhythm. "And tell your husband I said hello."

As the morning rush subsided, the bell above the bakery door chimed merrily.

Julian walked in, having just flown in from a brief deposition meeting downtown. He had removed his suit jacket, his white dress shirt slightly wrinkled, carrying a massive bouquet of fresh red tulips—my absolute favorite.

He walked behind the counter, bypassing the register entirely, and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, pressing a soft kiss against the nape of my neck.

"How’s the front line looking, General?" Julian murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out the front window at the bustling line of customers spilling out onto the sidewalk.

"We’re officially out of chocolate croissants, the mixer is overheating, and we just booked three high-end wedding cakes for next month," I laughed, leaning back against his chest, feeling completely safe and utterly cherished. "In short? We're surviving."

Julian chuckled, turning me around in his embrace so my arms rested around his neck. "Surviving? Clover, you're dominating. The federal receiver's office just finalized the preliminary asset distribution. Because of the pre-nuptial clawback clauses we filed, your bakery building has been officially unencumbered from Richard's estate holdings. You own this entire block, free and clear."

I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. "The whole block? Permanently?"

"Permanently," Julian smiled, his stormy hazel eyes shining with a deep, unshakeable devotion. "No more landlords. No more financial anxiety. Just you, the bakery, and whatever future we decide to build together."
