Chapter 5 - The Gala of Wolves

The annual Boston Children’s Preservation Gala was the crown jewel of the city’s social calendar, held inside the glittering ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel. It was an arena where fortunes were flaunted, alliances were forged, and blood was drawn with diamond-tipped smiles.

Dominic had not canceled his appearance. In fact, he had doubled his table sponsorship.

When the black armored Maybach pulled up to the red carpet at eight o'clock that evening, the flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, chaotic frenzy. Security barriers groaned under the weight of eighty reporters screaming over the roar of harbor winds.

The rear door opened. Dominic stepped out first, immaculate in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his face an impenetrable mask of absolute authority. He turned, offering his hand to the interior of the vehicle.

Norah Callaway stepped onto the carpet.

She wore an emerald silk gown that fell in clean, elegant lines to the floor, her hair swept up into an intricate chignon that exposed the delicate slope of her neck. She wore no gaudy diamonds, only a pair of simple pearl earrings that had belonged to her grandmother. Beside Dominic’s predatory grandeur, she looked like pure, unshakeable grace.

The crowd went completely silent for one shocking second before the shouted questions began raining down.

*“Mr. Reyes! Is this the mother of your child?”*

*“Norah! How long have you been hiding the heir to Reyes Holdings?”*

*“Mr. Reyes, does Senator Vance know about this?”*

Dominic didn't answer. He placed his hand firmly against the small of Norah’s back, guiding her through the gilded double doors into the ballroom.

Inside, the room was a sea of black ties, champagne flutes, and hushed, venomous whispering. At the center of the room stood Victoria Vance, clad in an ice-white designer dress, flanked by her father, Senator Thomas Vance, and three prominent board members of Reyes Holdings.

Victoria’s eyes were like chipped flint as Dominic and Norah approached. She stepped forward, her champagne flute held with white-knuckled rigidity.

“Dominic,” Victoria purred, her voice loud enough to carry across the nearest three tables. “What an... unexpected guest you’ve brought. I didn't realize the catering staff were permitted to sit at the primary tables.”

Norah felt the muscles in Dominic’s back tense into steel. Before he could unleash the violence simmering beneath his collar, Norah stepped forward on her own, her voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of someone who had commanded chaotic emergency rooms while surgeons panicked.

“Ms. Vance,” Norah said smoothly, meeting the socialite’s venomous glare with placid eyes. “I understand you’re uncomfortable. It must be humiliating to realize that five years of dynastic plotting can be dismantled by the simple truth.”

Victoria flushed a furious, ugly crimson. “You insolent little—”

“Victoria,” Senator Vance warned, placing a hand on his daughter’s arm, his eyes narrowing at Dominic. “Dominic, we need a word in the private lounge. The board is on the verge of calling an emergency vote regarding your fitness to lead the Atlantic Corridor development.”

Dominic looked at the senior politician with cold contempt. “The board will do whatever I instruct them to do, Thomas. Because at six o'clock this evening, I purchased the remaining twenty-two percent of voting stock previously held by my father’s shell accounts. I don't need your political PAC, and I certainly don't need your daughter.”

Gasps rippled through the surrounding high-society onlookers.

Dominic took a flute of sparkling water from a passing waiter’s tray and tapped the side of the glass with a silver butter knife. The clear, ringing sound echoed across the massive ballroom, drawing the attention of four hundred of Boston’s most powerful elite.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Dominic announced, his voice projecting effortlessly into the cavernous room. “Tonight, Reyes Holdings is pledging a fifty-million-dollar endowment to establish the Callaway Pediatric Critical Care Wing at Mercy Community Hospital.”

A collective intake of breath swept the room.

Dominic turned his gaze directly toward Norah, his eyes burning with an open, unapologetic devotion that shattered every cold rumor ever written about him.

“The wing will be overseen and directed exclusively by Norah Callaway,” Dominic continued, ignoring the furious retreat of the Vance family toward the exits. “And my daughter, Lily Reyes, will serve as its honorary patron. Any institution, any individual, or any board member who attempts to challenge this appointment will find themselves fighting me in every court, every market, and every street in this city.”

He raised his glass. “To the truth. However long it took to find its way home.”

Norah stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The man was terrifying, impossible, and utterly unrelenting. And for the first time in five years, she realized she was no longer fighting the world alone.
