Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Neonatal Ward

The victory at the gala lasted exactly twelve hours.
The following morning, Norah stood inside the newly unlocked executive office of the neonatal wing at Mercy. Dr. Gerald Finch had been escorted from the building by hospital security at dawn, his files confiscated, but the atmosphere inside the unit remained razor-tense.
Rosa Delgado, the veteran receptionist, hurried down the corridor, her rubber-soled shoes squeaking on the linoleum. Her face was pale, clutching a laminated medical tracking sheet.
“Norah,” Rosa whispered, pulling her into an empty consultation room. “Something is wrong with the central pharmacy log from last night.”
Norah immediately switched into clinical mode. “What happened?”
“The neonatal morphine reserves. A requisition order was processed under your employee ID number at three in the morning—four hours before your suspension was lifted,” Rosa said, her hands shaking. “Ten vials are unaccounted for. And the state medical oversight inspector just walked through the front doors with two detectives.”
Norah’s stomach plummeted. It was an execution move. Simple, elegant, and catastrophic. If a nurse was implicated in the theft of pediatric controlled substances, her license was revoked immediately, criminal charges followed, and the Department of Children and Families would open an emergency custody investigation within hours.
“Someone used my terminal,” Norah breathed, her mind racing. “Only the senior floor supervisor has that keycode.”
The door to the consultation room swung open. Detective Miller of the Boston PD stood in the doorway, an investigator Norah recognized from several previous clinical trauma inquiries. Behind him stood a sleek, sharp-faced woman wearing a state investigator badge.
“Norah Callaway?” the woman said coldly. “I’m Agent Harris, Massachusetts Department of Public Health. We have an emergency warrant to inspect your locker and review an unauthorized controlled substance draw.”
Before Norah could speak, heavy footsteps echoed outside the corridor.
Marco Bell appeared in the doorway, flanked by two Reyes security operatives in tailored dark suits. Marco didn't look at the detectives; he held a sleek leather tablet in his hand and stepped directly between Norah and the investigators.
“Agent Harris,” Marco said, his voice flat and professional. “Before you open that locker, you might want to review the server security footage from the Mercy IT department.”
Harris frowned, crossing her arms. “Who the hell are you? This is a state investigation.”
“I’m the man who pays the IT department’s private contractor,” Marco replied, turning the tablet screen toward her. “At 3:12 AM, Dr. Finch’s personal administrative assistant entered the pharmacy sub-room using a cloned master badge. She accessed the terminal, manually entered Ms. Callaway’s old credentials, and dropped ten vials of saline-labeled morphine into a courier bag.”
Marco swiped the screen to reveal a high-definition timestamped still of the assistant meeting a man in a black sedan behind the hospital dumpster.
“The sedan is registered to a private consulting firm retained by Senator Thomas Vance’s campaign committee,” Marco continued, his tone deadly calm. “The assistant is currently sitting in a Reyes security vehicle in the basement, giving a full confession to the district attorney’s special investigations unit.”
Detective Miller stared at Marco, then turned to look at Agent Harris. “Looks like we’re at the wrong scene, Harris.”
The state investigator’s mouth snapped shut. She glared at Norah, then at Marco, before turning on her heel and marching out of the unit without another word.
Norah leaned back against the counter, her knees trembling. The trap had been laid with vicious precision; if Dominic’s men hadn't intercepted the digital logs within minutes of the breach, she would have been in handcuffs before noon, her daughter stripped from her arms by state welfare.
Marco tucked the tablet under his arm and looked at Norah with genuine respect. “The boss anticipated this, Ms. Callaway. He told me last night: *They can't beat me in the boardroom, so they will try to make her look unfit.* He has twenty men running background checks on every employee in this building.”
“Where is he?” Norah asked, her voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of relief and fury.

“At the penthouse,” Marco said. “With Lily.”
