Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Six months after the trial of Marcus Vance, the winter frost had returned to the Hudson Valley, coating the slate roofs of Blackwood Manor in a thick skin of glistening, diamond-hard ice.

Inside the private boardroom of the Manhattan Federal Detention Center, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth.

Marcus Vance sat on a bolted steel stool, dressed in the coarse orange jumpsuit of a convicted felon. His silver hair was overgrown, greasy, and uncombed; the five-thousand-dollar suits were gone, replaced by nine inches of steel chain connecting his wrists to a leather waist belt.

Across the stainless-steel table sat Assistant United States Attorney Richard Sterling, reviewing three newly unsealed depositions from the Department of Justice.

"Your appeal was denied by the Second Circuit this morning, Marcus," Sterling stated, sliding a certified court order across the metal surface. "Your sentence of thirty-two years at ADX Florence stands without possibility of administrative review."

Vance’s face twisted into an ugly, venomous sneer. "Adrian thinks he’s safe, doesn't he? He thinks because he married the maid and put the bastard child in a private school that the debt is settled."

Sterling did not look up from his legal pad. "The debt was settled when your accounts in Malta were liquidated to pay sixty-four million dollars in federal restitution, Marcus."

"There are others, Sterling," Vance whispered, leaning his face forward, his yellowed teeth bared in a feral grin. "The people who financed the maritime ambush twelve years ago... they don't sit in Queens apartments. They sit in the Senate. They sit on the boards of the defense conglomerates in Geneva. When Adrian launched that investigation, he pulled a pin on a grenade that will blow this entire state apart."

"Let them try, Marcus," a deep, chilling baritone echoed from the doorway.

The heavy steel door swung open.

Adrian Kane walked into the interview room, wearing a tailored charcoal cashmere overcoat and leather gloves. His face was carved from granite, his slate-gray eyes as cold and deep as an Arctic crevasse.

Vance froze, his smirk dying in his throat as the billionaire closed the door behind him.

Adrian walked over to the table, stopping three inches from the shackled prisoner. He did not sit. He towered over the man who had tried to murder his family, radiating an aura of lethal, absolute dominion that made the hair on Vance's arms stand straight up.

"I spent six months auditing your personal safe deposit boxes in Zurich, Marcus," Adrian said softly, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register. "I found the letters from Senator Thomas Romano. I found the offshore wire receipts from the Aegean Maritime Consortium."

Vance swallowed hard, his throat clicking audibly.

"Every single one of your associates has been served with federal treason indictments as of six o'clock this morning," Adrian continued. "Romano resigned his seat an hour ago. The Aegean Consortium has been placed under international naval blockade by the Fifth Fleet. The shadow you tried to hide behind has been incinerated."

Adrian reached into his pocket, pulled out a small, laminated photograph, and laid it on the steel table directly before Vance's eyes.

It was a photograph of eight-year-old Mia, wearing a white sailor dress, laughing in the sunlight as she rode a miniature Welsh pony across the emerald lawns of Blackwood Manor, holding her father's hand.

"Look at her face, Marcus," Adrian commanded.

Vance's eyes darted down, trembling violently.

"That child owns every asset you ever stole," Adrian whispered. "Every building, every ship, every dollar. You spent thirty years building an empire on blood and fear, and in the end, it was inherited by a six-year-old girl with an apple juice button."

Adrian turned on his heel, tapping the steel door once for the guard to release the magnetic latch.

"Enjoy the concrete in Colorado, Marcus," Adrian said over his shoulder as the door clicked open. "The Kane family is officially closed for business."

The heavy steel security door slammed shut, sealing Marcus Vance in the dark forever.
