Chapter 7 - The School on the Hill

Spring arrived in the Hudson Valley with an explosion of white dogwood blossoms, sweet river rain, and the rich, untainted scent of damp pine needles.
At the prestigious Saint Jude’s Country Day School in Tarrytown—an exclusive academy perched upon a rolling green hill overlooking the river—the afternoon dismissal bell had just chimed.
Dozens of wealthy parents in designer trench coats and luxury SUVs waited along the circular cobblestone driveway. Among them, whispering behind oversized sunglasses, were several high-society matrons who had spent months gossiping about the billionaire who had married his housekeeper.
"Look at her," one woman sneered quietly, nudging her friend. "Claire Mercer. She thinks wearing Chanel makes people forget she scrubbed toilets eight months ago."
Her friend scoffed. "A common cleaner from Queens. Adrian Kane will grow bored of the domestic novelty within a year. A man like that needs a woman of breeding, not a girl who knows which bleach cleans grout."
The heavy wrought-iron gates of the school courtyard swung open.
A sleek, midnight-blue Rolls-Royce Phantom glided silently up the driveway, followed by two black armored Suburbans bearing the discreet silver crest of Kane Security.
The chauffeur stepped out, holding an umbrella against the light spring mist, but before he could open the passenger door, Adrian Kane stepped out himself.
He was dressed in a tailored navy three-piece suit, his posture straight, his presence immediately silencing the whispering women along the balustrade.
He walked around the vehicle, opened the rear door, and extended his hand.
Claire Kane stepped out into the afternoon light.
She was a vision of effortless, understated elegance: a custom ivory cashmere trench coat, her dark hair falling in soft, lustrous waves past her shoulders, wearing the simple platinum signet ring of the Kane dynasty on her left hand. Her face was serene, radiant, and completely unbothered by the stares of the women around her.
"Mommy! Daddy!"
A clear, musical voice rang across the stone courtyard.
Mia came sprinting through the double doors of the schoolhouse, wearing her navy-blue uniform jumper, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders, her yellow ribbon catching the sunlight.
She bypassed the children of ambassadors, ignored the scowling society matrons, and launched herself directly into Adrian's waiting arms.
Adrian caught her with effortless grace, swinging her high into the air as she squealed with delight, pressing her face against his collar before settling her securely against his chest.
"How was geography, my little explorer?" Adrian smiled, kissing her glowing cheek.
"I found the Indian Ocean!" Mia announced with world-shaking gravity, holding up a paper map covered in green crayon. "The teacher said that's where the big ships sail! She said Daddy's ships carry the lights across the water!"
Adrian looked over her head at Claire, his slate-gray eyes brimming with profound, unbreakable pride.

"Your teacher is right, sweetheart," Adrian said softly. "The lights are on. And they're never going dark again."
Claire walked up beside them, linking her arm securely through Adrian's, resting her head against his shoulder as the three of them walked back toward the car, leaving the gossiping women behind on the cobblestones like forgotten ghosts.
