Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Long Island Estate

Within forty-eight hours of the mass arrests in Greenwich, the Romano criminal enterprise ceased to exist.
Federal receivers seized forty-four commercial properties, twelve shipping berths, and two hundred and forty million dollars in liquid offshore assets.
Under the provisions of the Federal Whistleblower Protection and Restitution Act, and pursuant to the emergency decrees of the New York Supreme Court, sixty percent of the unencumbered legitimate assets of the Romano maritime fleet—valued at one hundred and sixty million dollars—were transferred into the permanent, sovereign ownership of The Lily & Clara Lin Heritage Trust.
I was officially appointed as the Executive Director of the trust, with full authority over the domestic operations and community housing programs of the Moretti estate.
The thirty-two-room stone mansion on Long Island underwent a complete physical and spiritual rebirth.
Adrian ordered a total purge of every room associated with the Romano family's influence.
The dark velvet drapes, oppressive surveillance barricades, and cold marble urns were removed, replaced by soaring architectural glass windows, warm white oak flooring, open libraries, and sunlit family spaces that flooded every corridor with clean, golden northern sunlight.
In the center of the south lawn, Adrian had an expansive cedar playhouse and obstacle course constructed for Lily and Bruno, surrounded by blooming lavender, fragrant white hydrangeas, and ancient weeping willows overlooking Long Island Sound.
Bruno’s recovery was total and miraculous.
Under Dr. Sarah Lin’s expert care, his arthritis improved with modern hydrotherapy, his coat became sleek and glossy, and his cheerful, thumping tail became the heartbeat of the entire household.
On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in late spring, Adrian and I stood on the wide stone terrace of the main manor, sipping fresh roast coffee.
Down on the emerald green lawn near the garden pond, four-year-old Lily was running with energetic, fearless speed, tossing a giant red rubber ball for Bruno, who bounded across the clover with joyful power before trotting back to drop the ball proudly at her feet.
Lily was laughing—a clear, musical, unburdened sound that carried across the water, her yellow dress glowing in the sunlight.
Adrian walked over, resting his arm gently around my waist, pulling me close against his broad chest.
"How does it feel, Executive Director Clara?" Adrian asked softly, a warm, tender smile touching his lips.

I looked out over the sparkling blue waters of the sound where our commercial vessels sailed peacefully toward the open horizon under a cloudless sapphire sky.
"It feels like daylight, Adrian," I answered with a heart full of absolute, unbreakable peace. "Pure, sovereign daylight."
