Chapter 8 - The Federal Trial and the Final Gavel

In September, the United States District Court in Lower Manhattan convened for the formal trial of The United States versus Vittorio Romano, Marco Romano, and Vivienne Romano.

The proceedings drew intense international media coverage, dominating the front pages of every major publication, exposing the chilling reality of corporate assassination, staged domestic framing, and syndicate extortion that had operated behind high-society boardrooms.

Adrian and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery dressed in tailored dark wool coats, holding hands firmly. Lily remained at the Long Island estate, playing safely in the autumn gardens with Dr. Sarah Lin, Mrs. Ferrara, and Bruno.

Vittorio, Marco, and Vivienne Romano sat at the defense table in matching orange federal inmate jumpsuits.

The transformation was absolute.

Without their designer gowns, bespoke suits, and manufactured arrogance, the Romano family looked like hollow, broken phantoms, their hands and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step.

Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented one hundred and twelve exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the recovered veterinary ketamine vials, the decrypted wiretaps, and Dr. Arthur Cole's devastating video confession.

When three-year-old Lily Carter’s sworn deposition was read into the official court record, the entire courtroom fell into an absolute, sacred hush:

"They put him in the black car. Miss Vivienne gave the leash. Bruno was sleepy."

The federal jury deliberated for exactly twenty-two minutes.

The foreperson stood in a packed, breathless courtroom and delivered the verdict across all forty-two felony counts:

"On all counts of Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Interstate Terrorism, Corporate Extortion, and Racketeering—Guilty on all counts."

Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the maximum statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:

"Vittorio Romano, Marco Romano, Vivienne Romano, you committed acts of monstrous, calculated cruelty against an innocent family and a loyal animal to satisfy an insatiable, criminal greed," Judge Montgomery declared. "You are hereby sentenced to Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute."

The wooden gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

Vivienne collapsed onto the defense table, screaming in bitter, total ruin as the armed federal marshals moved in to drag the disgraced predators down the subterranean holding corridor forever.

Adrian and I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Special Agent Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
