Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Basement

By 6:00 p.m., the storm over the East River had intensified into a howling gale that rattled the leaded glass panes of Blackwater House.

The executive study had been cleared of all terminal directors and guards.

Enzo stood with his back against the locked double doors, his arms crossed over his chest, while Ada Sterling sat at the corner table, running digital fingerprints extracted from the planted money band through our private biometric database.

Emma was asleep on the deep velvet settee near the roaring limestone hearth, wrapped in Alessandro’s heavy charcoal cashmere overcoat, her rabbit backpack resting securely against her pillow. Her small chest rose and fell in a calm, rhythmic pattern, completely insulated from the violence circling the room.

I sat in a high-backed leather armchair, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea that Ada had personally prepared, my hands finally ceasing their violent trembling.

Alessandro sat behind his desk, having discarded his suit jacket, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark, intricate maritime tattoos that marked his twenty years of sovereign rule.

Arthur Ross—seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling Legal and the chief corporate litigator for the Moretti empire—stepped through the private library door carrying a heavy leather briefcase stamped with the seal of the Delaware Chancery Court.

"The forensic reconstruction of the locker plant is complete, Alessandro," Arthur Ross reported, adjusting his wire-rimmed spectacles as he opened the case on the desk. "The fifty one-hundred-dollar bills found in Elena's locker were withdrawn from First Brooklyn Commercial at eleven-fifteen this morning."

"Under whose commercial account?" Alessandro asked, his voice razor-sharp.

"Under an unlisted corporate checking account registered to Apex Terminal Holdings LLC," Arthur revealed, rotating his tablet to display the banking manifests. "The sole authorized signatory on that account is Richard Vance."

I let out a ragged breath, the tears burning behind my eyelids as the truth lay bare on the screen.

"Richard didn't just plant the cash this morning, Alessandro," Arthur continued, his jaw tightening. "Look at the master maritime logistics merger scheduled for ratification at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

An illuminated corporate cap sheet populated the tablet display:

THE HUDSON-EAST RIVER DEEPWATER MARITIME ALLIANCE

TOTAL VALUATION: $180,000,000.00

PRIMARY TRUSTEE: ALESSANDRO MORETTI (65% CONTROLLING VOTING SHARES)

SUCCESSION DIRECTIVE: IN THE EVENT OF PRIMARY TRUSTEE MORTALITY OR PHYSICAL INCAPACITATION, 100% OF VOTING PROXIES TRANSFER UNCONDITIONALLY TO THE MANAGING DIRECTOR: RICHARD VANCE.

"Richard had already signed an off-grid purchase-and-sale agreement with a private equity syndicate in Zurich," Arthur explained. "He intended to execute your sudden 'respiratory collapse' today, blame your death on a desperate maid seeking extortion money, assume full sovereign control of the one-hundred-and-eighty-million-dollar deepwater terminals by sunrise, and wire forty-five million dollars in liquidation proceeds to Grand Cayman before the five families could convene an inquest."

Alessandro did not speak for a long, heavy minute.

He looked at the pink inhaler sitting on his leather blotter, then at five-year-old Emma sleeping peacefully beneath his coat.

For thirty years, he had shared bread, blood, and territory with Richard Vance. He had paid for Richard’s legal defense when the federal prosecutors attacked their shipping lanes; he had bought Richard’s family home out of foreclosure; he had named him second-in-command of his life’s work.

And Richard had calculated that the life of his oldest friend and the freedom of an innocent mother and child were worth forty-five million pieces of silver in Zurich.

"Arthur," Alessandro spoke into the quiet room, his baritone dropping into an octave of subterranean iron.

"Yes, Alessandro?"

"Draft the emergency petition for immediate corporate receivership against Apex Terminal Holdings. Freeze every commercial line of credit tied to Richard Vance's name. And notify the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Public Corruption Task Force that the Moretti family will be delivering the master forensic ledgers at sunrise."
