Chapter 4 - The Interrogation in the Boathouse

The rain lashed against the reinforced concrete walls of the subterranean boathouse beneath the north cliffs of the estate.
The smell of motor oil, salt water, and cold iron hung thick in the air.
Tied to a heavy steel drafting chair in the center of the dry dock was Silas Veron. His bespoke Brioni jacket had been stripped away, his silver cufflinks removed, his hands secured behind him with heavy industrial cable restraints.
Standing ten feet away, flanked by four armed operators from Russo Sovereign Tactical, were Dante Russo and Claire Vance.
Dante wore a tailored dark charcoal wool overcoat over his black dress shirt, his posture towering and formidable, radiating the absolute, uncontested dominance of a king who had returned from the grave.
Beside him, I wore my tailored dark wool coat, holding the cracked pocket watch in my right hand, my posture calm, sovereign, and entirely unbothered.
Silas lifted his head. A dark, swollen bruise marked his left cheek where tactical guards had disarmed him in the garage, but his eyes still burned with arrogant, aristocratic venom.
"You're making a catastrophic legal error, Dante," Silas sneered, his voice echoing off the concrete slipway. "The Delaware Chancery Court recognizes my management proxy. The Chicago consortium has already wired the sixty-million-dollar escrow deposit. You cannot hold me in a private basement without triggering federal wire fraud indictments."
"We decrypted your private Zurich server forty minutes ago, Silas," Dante said softly.
Arthur Ross stepped forward from the shadow of the security tunnel, holding a thick, red-tabbed federal dossier stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
"Let’s review the execution contract, Silas," Arthur Ross announced, his clinical baritone carrying the cold finality of an iron vault door closing. "Paragraph Nine: Upon the confirmed cardiac arrest of Dante Russo, Silas Veron was to execute the emergency sale of Berth 4 to Apex Logistics LLC in Grand Cayman, receiving a forty-million-dollar personal liquidity payout wired to a holding account in the Bahamas."
Arthur turned the tablet toward the light, displaying the high-definition security logs extracted from the main floor:
October 14, 08:14:12 PM — Silas Veron entering the private pantry, unsealing the 2018 vintage decanter, and adding four drops from the amber glass vial.
"We also recovered the audio logs from your private vehicle," Arthur added. "You were recorded instructing your driver to ensure that Claire Vance’s locker was searched immediately after Dante’s collapse, and that she was to be executed in the boathouse before the state police arrived."
Silas’s breath hitched in his throat. The color drained from his face in a single, catastrophic wave, leaving his skin the sallow, grayish hue of wet drywall.
"Dante... please," Silas stammered, his aristocratic mask completely disintegrating into bare, feral panic. "The Chicago families were going to move on the ports regardless! They gave me an ultimatum! I did it to keep the Russo name on the corporate board!"
Dante stepped forward, stopping six inches from where the trembling advisor sat pinned against the steel chair.
He reached down, took the cracked silver pocket watch from my hand, and held the engraved casing before Silas’s eyes.
"You didn't protect my name, Silas," Dante whispered, each word cutting through the damp air like a drawn razor. "You poisoned my wine, framed the daughter of the man who built our docks, and tried to murder a five-year-old child who gave me her only breath of life. You believed that because Claire was a maid, she was powerless. You believed that because I was dying, I was blind."

Dante turned to his tactical captain, Marco.
"Call Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Dante commanded. "Have the federal transport vans enter through the north service tunnel. And erase the name Veron from every port, every terminal, and every registry in this state."
