Chapter 3 - The Gathering at the Somerset Club

At 6:45 p.m., the rain had stopped, leaving the gas-lit brick sidewalks of Beacon Hill glistening under a cold, starless October sky.

The historic Somerset Club on Commonwealth Avenue was the crown jewel of Old Boston prestige: soaring ceilings of hand-carved mahogany, imported Italian marble fireplaces, and crystal chandeliers that had illuminated dinners for presidents, senators, and industrial barons for a century and a half.

The grand dining room on the second floor was packed to absolute capacity with one hundred and fifty guests: federal judges in black tie, state senators, senior banking partners from State Street, and the entire extended Cole and Mercer families.

Seated at the central elevated head table was Vanessa Cole.

She looked breathtaking.

She wore an exquisite, custom-tailored dark emerald-green silk velvet evening gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline that displayed a four-carat diamond pendant Grant had given her for her birthday. Her blonde hair was swept up into an architectural chignon; her makeup was flawless, hiding whatever terror had gripped her that morning.

Beside her sat her mother, Eleanor Cole, and her father, Richard Cole, holding court with three senior commercial lenders while sipping vintage champagne from crystal flutes.

And sitting three seats away, dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a glass of single-malt scotch with easy, arrogant familiarity, was Derek Sloan.

"A magnificent alliance for our city, Richard," Senator William Bradley was announcing smoothly, raising his glass to Vanessa's father. "The Mercer Ridge capital reserves united with the Cole commercial real estate holdings creates an unshakeable dynasty in New England."

"Indeed," Richard Cole purred, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "My daughter has always understood that true legacy requires vision, discipline, and uncompromising standards."

Vanessa smiled radiantly, taking a delicate sip of champagne, leaning toward Derek Sloan to whisper behind her napkin:

"Did your private detective handle the maid?"

Derek smirked, his eyes cold and predatory. "Two Cambridge squad cars are parked outside the estate gates right now. The moment Grant leaves for the city, they're taking her in for questioning on the missing Cartier watch from last month. She won't be speaking to anyone until Sunday morning."

Vanessa exhaled, a soft, triumphant laugh escaping her throat. "Perfect. Once Grant signs the marital trust covenant at the altar tomorrow, his attorneys can't touch the three point two million."

BANG.

The heavy carved double mahogany doors of the grand dining hall were suddenly blown inward off their brass hinges with a concussive hydraulic roar.

The chamber quartet near the mezzanine died mid-chord.

The one hundred and fifty titans of Boston high society sprang to their feet in unison.

Stepping through the shattered entrance was Grant Mercer.

He did not wear the joyful, accommodating posture of an eager groom. He wore an immaculate, custom-tailored dark charcoal three-piece wool suit with razor-sharp lapels, an ankle-length black cashmere overcoat open over his broad shoulders, radiating total, uncontested dominance.

Walking beside him, holding his left arm with quiet, sovereign dignity, was Hannah Brooks.

She was no longer wearing the faded cotton uniform of a domestic housekeeper. She looked stunning, regal, and completely transformed in an exquisite, bespoke dark navy wool three-piece suit with an ivory silk blouse provided by the private stylists Arthur Ross had flown in from New York at noon, her dark hair swept back into an elegant chignon, wearing an ancestral gold-and-sapphire signet compass around her neck.

And following two paces behind them were Arthur Ross, Chief Investigator Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Crimes Division, and Lead Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by eight armed federal marshals in dark tactical windbreakers.

Vanessa Cole’s champagne flute slipped from her manicured fingers.

CRASH.

The lead crystal shattered across the white linen tablecloth, vintage champagne soaking into the floral centerpieces as the color drained from her face in a single, catastrophic wave.

Derek Sloan leaped to his feet, knocking his chair onto the parquet floorboards, his hand flying instinctively toward his jacket before four armed federal marshals leveled suppressed sidearms directly at his chest.

"Freeze! Hands on the table!" Special Agent Sarah Lin barked.

"Grant...?" Vanessa stammered, leaping backward from the head table, clutching her throat as her knees knocked against the chair. "What... what is the meaning of this theatrical disruption? Our families are here—"

"The only family represented here tonight, Vanessa," Grant Mercer said, his clear, resonant baritone booming through the vaulted hall without the aid of a microphone, "is the one you tried to rob."
