Chapter 2 - The Secret Ledger of Hilda Dawson

The digital clock on Arthur’s desk flashed 12:03 AM as he stared at the frozen image of Hilda Dawson’s smiling face. The mask of the loyal, grieving housekeeper had completely slipped, revealing something calculating and predatory underneath. Arthur did not sound the alarm. Instead, a cold, calculating fury settled over his bones. He grabbed his encrypted satellite phone and dialed Calvin Pierce, his former military commander turned private investigator.

"Calvin," Arthur’s voice was a low, dangerous rasp. "I need you at the estate. Now. Bring your digital forensics kit and bypass the front gate silently."

"Trouble at the Iron Cradle, boss?" Calvin’s voice rumbled through the receiver, steady and sharp.

"Worse than trouble," Arthur replied, his eyes glued to the monitor where Hilda had now turned around, walking away from the nursery without ever delivering the tray. "My daughters are being starved, and Hilda is running a psychological operation right under my roof. Get here."

While waiting for Calvin, Arthur reviewed the historical footage from the hidden cameras, spanning back three days. The horror deepened with every frame. During the day, Hilda played the doting caretaker, smiling for the nanny-cam in the main living areas. But the moment night fell, the routine shifted. Hilda systematically withheld the meals prepared by the kitchen staff, locking the pantry and the main kitchen refrigerators. The high-end groceries Arthur paid for didn't reach his daughters' plates; instead, records later accessed from the estate's inventory logs showed premium cuts of meat and imported goods disappearing from the pantries—goods that Hilda was quietly having shipped off-property or sold.

Worse still, the homeless woman outside the window wasn't a random vagrant. Her name was Martha, a former pediatric nurse who had lost her license during a bitter malpractice lawsuit years ago, and who had lived on the fringes of the Percy Warner Park woods bordering Arthur’s property. For months, Martha had noticed the emaciated state of the little girls peering through the nursery bars during her daily scavenges, and had begun sneaking scraps to keep them alive while Hilda slept in the east wing.

When Calvin arrived through the subterranean service tunnel forty minutes later, he brought bad news. "Arthur, I ran a background check on Hilda Dawson’s employment history before she came to you twelve years ago. Her previous employer was Elena’s family estate in Savannah. She wasn't just a housekeeper there. She was Elena’s personal nursemaid."

Arthur’s breath hitched in his throat. "Elena never mentioned that."

"She didn't have to," Calvin said, laying a thick file on the steel desk. "And look at this financial audit I pulled up using my back-channels. Over the last two years, since Elena’s death, Hilda’s personal bank accounts have received anonymous wire transfers totaling over four hundred thousand dollars. The originating accounts trace back to a shell company managed by Victoria Vance."

Arthur’s blood ran cold. Victoria Vance—the socialite whose husband Mark had recently faced public scandal—was Elena’s estranged half-sister. Elena and Victoria had shared a bitter, lifelong feud over their family inheritance, a feud that had supposedly ended when Elena married Arthur and moved to Nashville.

"Victoria," Arthur whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "She’s been paying Hilda."

"To do what?" Calvin asked grimly. "Starve your children? Or is there a broader play?"

Arthur looked back at the live monitor. Down the hall, Hilda was walking toward the master study—Elena’s old sanctuary, which Arthur had kept locked since the funeral. She carried a brass skeleton key in her hand.
