Chapter 5 - The Blood on the Ledger

Time seemed to fracture into slow motion. As Hilda lunged toward the children with the heavy silver letter opener raised high, Arthur exploded into action. He didn't think; he reacted with the raw, terrifying instinct of a cornered animal protecting its young.
He vaulted across the mahogany desk, his heavy leather shoes sliding across the polished floorboards. He intercepted Hilda mid-air, tackling her hard against the antique bookshelf. The impact sent a cascade of heavy volumes crashing down around them, leather-bound pages fluttering like wounded birds in the dim moonlight.
Hilda shrieked, thrashing with unnatural strength, slashing the letter opener wildly through the air. A sharp pain seared across Arthur’s forearm as the blade grazed his skin, hot blood soaking through his shirt sleeve. But he didn't let go. He grabbed her wrist with both hands, twisting it downward with bone-crushing pressure until the letter opener slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the hardwood floor.
"Daddy!" Rosalyn screamed, bursting into tears as Camille buried her face in her sister’s pajamas, trembling violently.
"Stay back, girls! Close your eyes!" Arthur ordered fiercely, pinning Hilda against the bookshelf with his forearm pressed hard against her throat. Her face turned purple, her breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps.
"You... you can't stop it, Arthur," Hilda choked out, a grotesque, bloody smile twisting her lips. "Victoria... Victoria already has the corporate shares. The estate... the trust... it’s all legally transferred. By sunrise, you won't just be ruined—you'll be arrested for embezzlement and child neglect. We planted the financial records in your private safe yesterday."
Arthur’s heart pounded, but his mind cleared with chilling clarity. He didn't care about the money. He didn't care about the corporate shares or the empire he had built. All that mattered was right here in this room: his daughters, and the unmasked truth of what had killed his wife.
The heavy mahogany door banged open behind them, and Calvin Pierce rushed into the room, his sidearm drawn and ready. He took in the scene in a fraction of a second—Hilda pinned against the bookshelf, Arthur bleeding from his arm, and the two terrified little girls huddled by the doorway.
"Drop your weapon—oh, she's empty-handed," Calvin barked, holstering his gun and pulling out heavy tactical zip-ties. He stepped forward, grabbing Hilda’s arms and securing them behind her back with ruthless efficiency. "Nice try, witch. You're coming with me."
As Calvin hauled Hilda to her feet, dragging her kicking and screaming toward the hallway, Arthur dropped to his knees. The adrenaline drained from his body, leaving a hollow, echoing ache in his chest. He crawled across the floor toward his daughters, pulling Rosalyn and Camille into his arms, burying his face in their fine, tangled hair.
"I've got you," Arthur whispered, his voice breaking as tears finally spilled over his lashes. "I've got you. You're safe now."

Camille looked up at him with big, solemn eyes, wiping a tear from his cheek with her sticky, small hand. "Daddy... can we have pancakes?"
A choked, watery laugh escaped Arthur’s lips. "Yes, baby. Whatever you want. Pancakes, berries, all of it. Forever."
