Chapter 7 - Return to the Estate

By midnight, the snow had stopped falling over the Hudson Valley, leaving the Moretti estate blanketed in a pristine, freezing white.

Inside the grand ballroom, the white roses still stood in their crystal vases, but the celebratory atmosphere had been replaced by the heavy, suffocating tension of an execution chamber.

The guests had long since been sent away under strict instructions of absolute silence. Only the inner circle remained: Dominic, Grace, little Emily standing quietly beside her mother, and Charles Bellamy and Isabella Romano, both seated in wooden chairs with their hands bound behind their backs by heavy plastic zip-ties.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Vincent Moretti walked into the ballroom. He was not alone.

With his hand resting protectively around her waist walked Sofia Moretti.

She wore a simple black wool coat over her shoulders, her silver-streaked hair falling softly around her face, her amber eyes burning with an unshakeable, sovereign authority that made even Dominic look down with respectful reverence.

Isabella gasped, shrinking back in her chair as if she were seeing a ghost crawl out of an open crypt.

Charles Bellamy’s eyes bulged, his face turning the color of curdled milk. “S-Sofia... how... the security detail up north was supposed to ensure—"

“Your security detail is currently tied up in the back of one of my cousin’s trucks,” Sofia said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor-sharp blade. She walked slowly toward the head table, stopping three feet from the terrified attorney.

“You thought you could lock me away in a cabin, take over the shipping terminals, and hand my life over to a cheap opportunist in an ivory dress,” Sofia continued, her voice dropping into a register of icy, controlled fury.

Isabella burst into frantic tears. “Vince! Please! I didn't know she was alive! Charles told me she died in a boating accident! He said he was managing the estate legally!”

Sofia turned her amber eyes toward Isabella, stepping closer until the younger woman pressed her back against the wooden chair.

“You wore my pendant, Isabella,” Sofia whispered, her gaze dropping to the silver jewelry resting against Isabella’s chest. “You wore my mother’s heirloom while standing in my house, smiling at my husband, pretending you earned a place at this table.”

May you like

Sofia reached out, her fingers catching the silver chain, and with a sharp, calculated jerk, she snapped the metal, pulling the pendant free from Isabella’s neck.

“You don't belong here,” Sofia said quietly, dropping the silver onto the marble floor. “None of you do.”
